Option one: take it to the yard yourself

- A person who possesses a junk vehicle has 15 days to surrender the title to the Secretary of State and apply for a junking certificate. Once that certificate is issued, the car is never titled again.
- A licensed business that has a junk vehicle and its title can pass it to another licensee before the junking certificate is issued, by filling out a uniform invoice. That invoice records the seller’s business name, address and dealer license number, the buyer’s name and address, the date, the car’s year, make, model and VIN, and both signatures.

Where a junk car goes next
Whoever buys it, a junk car follows roughly the same path. Fluids come out first: fuel, oil, coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid and refrigerant, plus the battery. Parts that still have value get pulled and sold, typically the engine, transmission, alternator, wheels and the catalytic converter. What’s left is crushed flat and sent to a shredder, where the metal is separated for recycling.
