Can you get cash for a car with no title?
Often, yes, but it depends on your state and the papers you still have. In Illinois, tell us what you've got (registration, insurance card, bill of sale) and we confirm on the call whether state rules allow the sale. In Indiana, the law needs a title or a BMV certificate of authority, and the car's age matters.
Titles get lost. They go through a wash in a coat pocket, get left in a glove box at an old address, or stay with a relative who passed away. None of that means the car is stuck with you forever. It does mean the answer depends on where you live and what else you can find.
We buy cars in Illinois and in Northwest Indiana up to Gary, and the two states treat a missing title very differently. Here’s each one.
Illinois: tell us what you have
Illinois keeps a tight record of junk vehicles. A person holding a junk vehicle is supposed to surrender its title and apply for a junking certificate within 15 days, and once that certificate is issued, the car can never be titled again (625 ILCS 5/3-117.1). That’s why buyers care so much about the paper that comes with the car.
If you don’t have the title, gather whatever you can find:
- your registration card (current or expired)
- an insurance card in your name for the car
- the bill of sale from when you bought it
- anything else showing the VIN and your name
Then tell us what you’ve got. Illinois rules decide which papers can carry a scrap sale for a given car, so we check your case on the call before booking a truck. We won’t promise that a bill of sale, a registration or an insurance card is enough on its own, because sometimes it isn’t. If it isn’t, the usual fix is a duplicate title from the Illinois Secretary of State, and we can pick up as soon as you have it.
Indiana: the law is stricter, and age matters
Indiana’s rule is written into statute. Every junk car sold to a recycler needs one of two papers, whatever its age: the certificate of title (or a duplicate from the BMV) or a BMV certificate of authority (IC 9-22-5-18). A seller who skips both commits a Class C misdemeanor.
The car’s age decides which of those is acceptable:
- Cars 15 model years old or more: a recycler may buy without a title, but only if you present a BMV certificate of authority.
- Cars under 15 model years old: the title is required. Buying one of these with neither paper is a Level 6 felony for the buyer (IC 9-32-9-29, as amended by Senate Enrolled Act 65 of 2024), so we can’t take one without it.
Never assume an older car needs no paper. Even at 20 or 30 model years, the certificate of authority is the minimum.
Both papers come from the Indiana BMV. Its fee chart lists a duplicate title at $15 and a certificate of authority at $4. You apply with proof of ownership, such as the current registration. Tell us which papers you have and we’ll tell you on the call which route fits your car.
Our Indiana coverage stops at Gary: Hammond, Whiting, East Chicago, Munster, Highland, Griffith, Gary and the towns touching it (Merrillville, Hobart, Lake Station and New Chicago). The pickup map spells out the boundary.

Handing over ownership at pickup
When you do have the title, the transfer happens at the curb. The driver shows you where the seller signs, you sign and print your name, and you hand it over with the keys if there are any. Before the driver leaves, take a photo of the signed title and keep your payment record. That’s your proof the car left your hands.
Take the plates off too, and check with your state’s vehicle office about what to do with them.
A leased car is the exception to all of this. The leasing company owns it, so the title isn’t yours to sign, whatever papers you hold. Can you junk a leased car? covers what to do with one that’s totaled or dead.
Titles that say something else
If your title is branded SALVAGE, JUNK, FLOOD or REBUILT, the sale still works, but the brand affects value and process. Junk, salvage and rebuilt titles in Illinois explains each brand, and what a rebuilt title means covers the most common one.

Will a junkyard buy a car without a title?
Some will and many won't, because Illinois and Indiana both keep a paper trail on junk vehicles. A buyer who takes a car without the right papers is taking a legal risk, so expect questions. We ask about your papers on the first call so nobody wastes a trip.
I only have the registration. Is that enough?
Sometimes, depending on the state and the car. Registration proves the car was registered to you, which helps, but it isn't a title. In Illinois, tell us what you have and we'll confirm. In Indiana, registration can serve as your proof of ownership when you apply to the BMV for a certificate of authority.
The registration expired years ago. Does that matter?
Expired registration doesn't stop a junk sale. What matters is proof of ownership. An expired registration card still shows whose name the car was in, and we'll talk through what else you have.
Who applies for a replacement title?
You do, as the owner: in Illinois through the Secretary of State, in Indiana through the BMV. We'll tell you which paper your situation calls for, and we can book the pickup as soon as you have it.
