Free junk car towing anywhere in Hobart, Indiana

My Hobart address says Merrillville. Do you still pick up junk cars there for free?

Yes. The south-side strip Hobart annexed in 1993 is served by the Merrillville post office, but it is Hobart, and both towns are on our map. Cash For Junk Cars Junk My Car Inc tows the car away free, takes nothing off the offer for it, and pays you at pickup by Zelle, Cash App or cash.

Merrillville on the envelope, Hobart on the map

Hobart’s south side confuses people. The retail strip along US 30, around Southlake Mall near I-65, was annexed from Ross Township in 1993, so it is part of Hobart, but the Merrillville post office serves it and businesses there list Merrillville addresses. For a pickup it makes no difference, because Merrillville is on our map too. Just tell us where the car actually sits.

The rest of the city is older and mostly residential. Hobart was platted in 1849, became a city in 1921 and had 29,752 people at the 2020 census. Hobart’s Lake George is really the Deep River, held back by a dam that the founder, George Earle, built. Ainsworth, near SR 51 and the Canadian National tracks, was a separate Ross Township community until Hobart annexed it in the early 1990s.

Title, duplicate or certificate under Indiana law

Every junk car sale in Hobart follows Indiana’s rule. The buyer needs to see the title, a duplicate title from the BMV, or a BMV certificate of authority, and the car’s age doesn’t change that. If you have no title, the sale can only go ahead when the car is 15 or more model years old and you hold the certificate of authority. A car under 15 model years with neither paper is one we must refuse, since the state treats buying it as a Level 6 felony for the buyer. Tell us what you have and we’ll confirm the route on the call. Our no-title guide explains more, and what free pickup covers is set out separately.

SR 51’s winding route and the truck rules

SR 51 doesn’t take a straight line through Hobart. From US 30 it runs north as Lake Park Avenue through Ainsworth, turns east on 10th Street, north on Lincoln Street, then along Main Street and east on 3rd Street downtown before heading out on Illinois, Lillian and Indiana Streets and Cleveland Avenue to meet US 6. US 6 itself comes south from the Borman at Ripley Street in Lake Station, and I-65 exit 258 at Ridge Road is listed for Hobart and Lake Station.

The city keeps trucks over 11,000 lb gross off streets that aren’t state highways, except for delivery, pickup or work in the city (§ 70.08(A)), and some streets carry lower posted limits, such as 5.5 tons on Lincoln, Garfield and State south of 10th Street. Pickups are named in that exception, and a tow from your house is one.

Hobart’s junked vehicle rule

Chapter 96, the nuisance chapter, defines a junked vehicle broadly: any dismantled, abandoned, wrecked or junked vehicle, or any other one that is legally or physically incapable of being operated. Keeping one in the open on public or private land anywhere in the city is unlawful outside properly zoned areas (§ 96.01), and “any abandoned vehicle” is listed as a nuisance in its own right (§ 96.02(M)). If the owner doesn’t act after notice, the city can abate it and put the cost on the property tax bill as a lien (§§ 96.03 to 96.07). That is an easy bill to avoid.

Alleys, lots and the 30-minute limit

About 77.5% of homes in Hobart are single-unit houses, and 20.0% are in buildings of five or more units, so the car is usually on a driveway, now and then in an apartment lot, where you arrange access with the manager. Alleys have their own rules: parked cars must leave 10 feet clear and not block a driveway, and loading in an alley is limited to 30 minutes unless the police chief grants a permit (§§ 72.04 to 72.05). If the car is in an alley, mention it on the form.

Next door to Hobart

North, Ripley Street leads into Lake Station, and the southern section of Gary shares a border with Hobart. Merrillville lies to the southwest, and Griffith is further west past it. The town of New Chicago is on our map as well. East is where we stop: SR 130 heads southeast toward Valparaiso, and Porter County is outside our area. The Indiana list on our coverage page has every town, and the free quote form gets you a callback within 15 minutes.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Hobart

Can I just push the junk car into my Hobart garage instead?

That satisfies the code. Under § 96.01, once notice is given, the vehicle owner and the landowner together have to move a junked vehicle into a fully enclosed garage or building, or out of the city. If the garage is full or the car won't roll, taking it out of the city is the other answer, and our tow for that costs you nothing.

Will the plow bury a car left at the curb?

It may. Hobart's Street Department plows main roads first, then secondary roads, then the subdivisions, and the plows are set to clear right to the curb. A car that can't move is in the way of that pass and can end up in a bank of plowed snow. If a storm is coming and the car is going anyway, book the pickup before it arrives.

Which rail lines could slow a pickup in Hobart?

Three freight railroads cross the city: Norfolk Southern, between County Line Road and Liverpool Road; the Chicago, Fort Wayne and Eastern, between County Line Road and Wisconsin Street; and Canadian National, around Colorado Street and Ainsworth. Give us the cross street nearest the car and the driver can pick an approach that avoids waiting at a crossing where possible.
