The far end of our Indiana map
Gary is as far east as our trucks go. The city is shaped like a T, with Lake Michigan on the north, Hammond and East Chicago at the northwest corner, and Lake Station and Portage on the east beside Miller Beach. Griffith, Hobart and Merrillville sit along the south, and Highland touches the city too. All of Gary is covered, and so are the Lake County towns around it. Portage and the rest of Porter County are not. The Indiana part of our coverage page has the full list.
Gary was founded in 1906 by U.S. Steel as the home of Gary Works, and it is a big city to cross: 69,093 people at the 2020 census, in neighbourhoods from Brunswick and Black Oak on the west to Aetna and Miller Beach on the east. Because the trucks start from Orland Hills, Gary is the long end of the run. A neighbourhood name and a cross street on the form help the driver plan it.
Highways, Broadway and the 165th Street wall
Interstates frame the city: the Indiana Toll Road (I-90), the Borman (I-80/94) and I-65. Inside, Broadway (SR 53) is the main north to south street through downtown, 4th and 5th Avenues carry US 12 and US 20, Ridge Road is Business US 6, and Cline Avenue (SR 912) runs through as well; its bridge reopened in 2020 after 11 years closed.
One quirk catches drivers out. 165th Street between Hammond and Gary has been walled off from the Gary side since 1981, so a car in Black Oak near the Hammond line can’t be reached by simply following 165th east. Black Oak sits near the Borman’s Burr Street exit, and Glen Park lies south of the Borman around IU Northwest.
No dead car on any premises
Some towns only care about cars on the street. Gary’s code goes further. Sec. 18-195 makes it unlawful to abandon a vehicle on public or private property, or to leave one so it looks abandoned, and bars any partially dismantled, nonoperating, wrecked or junked vehicle from any premises, private ones included. The city adopts Indiana’s definitions (Sec. 18-194), and its department of development and planning handles removal and disposal. A towed car that isn’t claimed can be sold after 20 days or sent to a scrap yard (Sec. 18-197).
About half of Gary’s occupied homes are rented (49.1% are owner-occupied), so if you rent, check with the landlord about driveway or lot access before the truck comes.
When a snow emergency is declared
A snow emergency can exist with just 1 inch of snow, and the city announces it by press release (Sec. 40-383). Designated snow routes then go to no parking at all. On other streets, an alternate-side ban runs from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: on even-numbered days the east and south sides are off limits, on odd days the north and west sides (Sec. 40-384). Any car that is stalled, can’t move or is left unattended in violation is towed and impounded (Sec. 40-385). A non-runner can’t switch sides, so it is better gone before winter. A pickup versus a trip to the junkyard compares the two ways to get rid of it.
Gary paperwork under Indiana law
The paperwork rule is set by the state, and it is the same in Gary as anywhere else in Indiana. To sell a junk car to a recycler, you need the title, a BMV duplicate title, or a BMV certificate of authority, whatever the model year. Going without the title is allowed only for a car at least 15 model years old, and only with the certificate of authority in hand. Under 15 model years with neither paper, the purchase would be a Level 6 felony for the buyer, so we won’t make it. Tell us which papers you have and we’ll explain on the call which route works; the no-title guide covers it in more depth. Ready for a number? Request a free quote.
Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Do you also pick up in Portage, past Miller Beach?
No. Miller Beach, in Gary's far northeast, is on our map, and so is Lake Station next to it. Portage is not, and neither is anywhere else in Porter County. If the car is close to the line and you aren't sure which side it is on, put the full address on the form and we'll confirm before we make an offer.
My Black Oak address has a Hammond phone number. Is it in Gary?
Yes. Black Oak, in the far southwest near the Borman's Burr Street exit, was annexed by Gary in the 1970s and still has Hammond phone numbers. It makes no difference to us, because both cities are on our map and the tow is free in each. Give us the street and a cross street so the driver can plan around the 165th Street barrier.
Does Gary have permit parking that affects a pickup?
In a few places. Residential reserved parking areas need a decal (Secs. 40-358 to 40-361), and the 3500 and 3600 blocks of Washington, Adams and Jefferson streets are kept for residents and their visitors. If the car is on one of those blocks, say so on the form, so the driver knows where it is parked and where the truck can stop to load it.
