How we cover a county this size

Cook County had 5,275,541 people at the 2020 census and contains nearly 130 municipalities, with Chicago as its seat. Nobody covers all of that well from one base, and we don’t pretend to. Our trucks start in Orland Hills, so this page is about the suburbs our trucks reach from there: the southwest suburbs closest to the base, the south suburbs down to the Indiana line, and the west suburbs along Ogden Avenue and I-55. We organise it by the roads the trucks actually use, because that’s how a pickup is planned.

Every town below gets the same terms: free junk car pick up, payment at pickup by Zelle, Cash App, cash or another digital payment, and an offer that doesn’t expire. Each village writes its own parking and nuisance code, so check yours if a notice has gone up.

Orland and Tinley: home turf

This is where the day starts. Orland Hills sits between Orland Park and Tinley Park, inside a box of 159th Street (US 6), 171st Street and La Grange Road (US 45). Harlem Avenue (IL 43) and I-80 frame Tinley Park to the south and east. These are the closest pickups to our base.

I-57 and Cicero Avenue

Running south from the city line, I-57 and Cicero Avenue pass a string of towns on our route. Oak Forest sits on 159th Street, Cicero and Central Avenue, with I-57’s exit 346 at 167th Street. Midlothian lies between I-57 and I-294 on Pulaski Road, 147th Street (IL 83) and Cicero, and has a Metra Rock Island station. Crestwood borders Oak Forest to the north, with Markham and Country Club Hills to the east and southeast, and Robbins and Posen fill in toward the east. For a car on a side street off Cicero, the nearest cross street is all the driver needs.

Harlem Avenue and Southwest Highway

Palos Heights is laid out along Harlem Avenue, Ridgeland Avenue, College Drive (IL 83), 127th Street and Southwest Highway (IL 7), with a Metra SouthWest Service station. Palos Park, Worth and Chicago Ridge sit on the same corridor. Much of the land to the west is Palos forest preserve, so give us the exact street rather than just the town.

87th and 95th Streets

Hickory Hills lies between 87th and 95th streets, with Roberts Road through the middle, the Tri-State on its east side and the Palos forest preserves to the west. Its neighbours are Palos Hills, Bridgeview, Justice and Willow Springs. Farther northeast are Bedford Park and Summit. If your car is sitting at a repair shop there, we load from shop lots too.

La Grange Road and Ogden Avenue

On the west side, La Grange Road (US 12/20/45) meets I-55 south of La Grange, and Ogden Avenue (US 34) meets I-294 to the west, with McCook next door. Berwyn sits on Ogden (old Route 66), Cermak, Roosevelt and Harlem, bordering Cicero, Stickney, Lyons and Riverside. Indian Head Park, Hodgkins and Forest View round out the corridor. If the car sits in an alley or in a garage off one, say so when you call.

Western Avenue and the city line

Blue Island borders Chicago’s Morgan Park neighbourhood; its Western Avenue was the old Wabash Road, and it has six Metra stations. If you’re weighing a tow to a yard yourself, you don’t have to: we come to you, and our guide to Chicago-area junkyards explains when a yard makes sense. Merrionette Park, Alsip, Evergreen Park and Oak Lawn are on the same stretch.

The far south

Matteson and Olympia Fields sit on Lincoln Highway and I-57. Homewood has Ridge Road and Dixie Highway downtown and shopping lots on Halsted between 175th and 183rd; it borders Hazel Crest, East Hazel Crest, Glenwood, Thornton, Chicago Heights and Flossmoor. Park Forest is bounded by US 30, Western Avenue, Central Park Avenue and Thorn Creek.

Lansing lies on the Calumet Shoreline next to South Holland, Calumet City, Lynwood, Glenwood, Thornton and the Indiana line at Hammond and Munster. The rest of this run, from Riverdale and Dolton out to Sauk Village, is in the south suburbs part of our areas page.

Chicago itself

Chicago is part of our area too, and we buy junk cars in Chicago and the south suburbs on the same terms. The city’s Streets and Sanitation department treats a car as abandoned when it’s on the public way and can’t be driven, hasn’t moved or been used for more than seven consecutive days and looks deserted, or has gone two or more days without state registration. Abandoned cars go to a city auto pound and, if nobody redeems them, get sold for scrap. Selling it first is the better deal. That rule is Chicago’s; suburbs set their own.

Papers in Illinois

A signed title is the simple case. If it’s missing, tell us what you have, such as registration, an insurance card or a bill of sale, and we’ll check on the call whether Illinois rules allow a scrap sale with those. Across the county lines, our Will County page runs from Lockport and Joliet to Crete and Beecher, the DuPage County page covers Burr Ridge, Willowbrook, Westmont and Oak Brook, and the full pickup map shows Indiana too. Cook County towns with their own pickup page

We have 49 town pages in Cook County. The areas we serve page lists every one with a line on what sets it apart, under Southwest suburbs, South suburbs and West suburbs.

Questions about Cook County pickups

Do you pick up in unincorporated Cook County?

Yes. Unincorporated communities such as Central Stickney, La Grange Highlands and Sag Bridge fall under the county's vehicle code rather than a village code. The county counts a car as abandoned if it can't be driven in its present condition, or if it hasn't moved for 7 days in a row and looks deserted. We buy those cars on the same terms as anywhere else.

There are junkyards near me. Why not just drive the car there?

If the car runs and you have the title, that's an option. Most junk cars don't run, though, and getting one to a yard means paying for a tow and then taking the yard's number at the gate. Our guide to junkyards near Chicago compares the two side by side.

Do you buy cars inside Chicago too?

Yes. The city is part of our area, and its abandoned-vehicle rules are a good reason not to wait: a car on the public way that can't be driven, hasn't moved in more than 7 days, or has had no registration for 2 or more days can be towed by the city.
