A small village with room to spread out

Palos Park had 4,899 residents at the 2020 Census, across 6.57 square miles in Palos and Lemont townships. That is a lot of ground for a small population. Of its homes, 70.4% are detached houses and 89.8% are owner-occupied, so a junk car here usually sits on private land: in a garage, beside one, or at the back of a lot rather than on the street.

That suits a flatbed. Give us the house number, say where on the property the car is, and tell us whether it rolls. A non-runner with no keys is still a straightforward job.

Restorable or wreck: how § 676.09 sorts junk cars

Palos Park defines an “inoperative or junk vehicle” as one without a current state and/or village licence, or one that is severely rusted, wrecked or dismantled (§ 676.09). It then sorts them into two groups. A “Restorable” vehicle may be kept on a residential lot, but only inside a legal garage. A “Wreck”, meaning one that isn’t economical to restore, as the police chief decides, isn’t allowed in residential areas at all.

The garage project that never got finished is the case to think about. While it’s restorable and stays in the garage, the code leaves it be. Once it’s outside, or the chief decides restoration doesn’t add up, it has to go. Our guide on whether an old car should be fixed or junked helps you make that call before the village makes it for you.

Chapter 470 adds an abandoned-vehicle rule: a car is abandoned when it’s in disrepair and undrivable, or unmoved for 7 days or more and apparently deserted (§ 470.01), and the police chief may order removal from private property after 7 days (§ 470.02).

IL 7, 123rd Street and Wolf Road

IL 7 has an interchange at 123rd Street and McCarthy Road in the village, then runs northeast to Harlem Avenue in Worth, where it becomes Southwest Highway. The village code gives several streets their own parking sections: 86th Avenue, 123rd Street, Wolf Road, US Route 45 and North Woodland Trail. If the car is on one of those, tell us and we’ll plan the stop around it. Palos Park station on Metra’s SouthWest Service and Pace Route 379 are useful landmarks.

Overnight and after snow

No car may sit on a village street for more than 30 minutes between 2:00 and 5:00 a.m. (§ 480.03). After 2 inches of snow or more, street parking is off for 8 hours and stays off until the snow is cleared (§ 480.04). Neither rule touches a car on your own drive, which is where we’d rather load anyway.

Getting a quote, and the towns beyond

Send the car’s details and we call back within 15 minutes with an offer that doesn’t expire. North of the village is Hickory Hills, and Palos Heights is to the northeast. Follow IL 7 to Harlem and you reach Worth, and Southwest Highway carries on into Chicago Ridge. Tinley Park lies to the south and Orland Park to the southwest. Our Cook County page and service area list show the full map.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Palos Park

The police chief has called my car a wreck. What now?

Section 676.09 doesn't allow a wreck anywhere in a residential area, so the sooner it goes, the better. Separately, § 470.02 lets the chief order an abandoned vehicle removed from private property after 7 days. Send us the car's details today. Same-day pickup is often possible, and the tow is free whatever state the car is in.

My street has a permit-only sign. Does that affect the pickup?

It might. Section 480.14 lets police, with Council approval, post 'Parking by Permit Only' areas, and residents there get permits for themselves and their guests. If your block is posted, tell us when you call so the driver can plan where to stop, ideally on your own drive rather than the road.

Do I need a village licence or any village paperwork to sell?

The licensing chapter of the village Traffic Code (Ch. 462) was repealed in April 2025 by Ord. 2025-10. For the sale itself, state paperwork is what counts: the title if you have it, or otherwise whatever you can find, such as the registration or an insurance card. We tell you on the call how Illinois treats those papers for a scrap sale.
