Alleys are for loading

In Worth, an alley is not a parking place. Village code 11-4-1(G) lets a vehicle stand in an alley only to load or unload, with 10 feet kept clear and no driveway blocked. That is why a dead car shouldn’t be left on the alley side of the garage, and it’s also why we can collect from there: a flatbed loading a junk car is using the alley exactly as intended.

Tell us which alley, the nearest cross streets and which garage, and whether the car rolls. If it’s on the garage apron, the driver can pull it straight out and onto the bed.

The certified letter under 10-9-2

The village handles junk cars in two parts. Under 10-9-2(A), leaving a vehicle or its parts on any street, alley, parkway or sidewalk is unlawful, and it can be towed. Under 10-9-2(B), an inoperable car on private property in public view is a public nuisance: the village sends notice by certified mail, the owner has 7 days to remove it, and then come a citation, adjudication and a court warrant for removal. A vehicle left on a highway for 10 hours or more can be towed on police order (10-9-2(D)).

The definition sits in 10-9-1: engine, wheels or other parts removed or altered so the car can’t run under its own power for 7 days or more. Repairs are allowed, but they must happen weekly and the car must be back on the road within 30 days. If the letter has arrived, ask for an offer the same day; we call back within 15 minutes.

Harlem, Southwest Highway and the Tri-State overhead

Harlem Avenue (IL 43) runs north and south through the village, and IL 7 ends at Harlem here after coming up from the southwest. On its way through Worth, Chicago Ridge and Bridgeview, I-294 passes over Ridgeland Avenue, 115th, 111th and 107th Streets, the SouthWest Service tracks and Southwest Highway. The North Palos Fire Protection District’s Station 3 at 7116 W. 111th Street, the Metra station and the Peaks Park lot on South Oak Park Avenue all make good reference points for the driver.

Renters, condos and the 24-hour snow rule

Only 49.0% of housing units in the village are single-unit buildings, 39.7% are in buildings of five or more, and 63.8% of homes are owner-occupied. So lot pickups are common here. Whoever has the car arranges access with the landlord or association, and we handle the loading.

Snow brings two rules. After 2 inches have fallen, no vehicle may stop, stand or park on any village street until the snow is removed, and owner and driver are jointly liable (11-4-1(C)(1)). Owners of multi-unit buildings, trailer parks and condos then have 24 hours to clear their off-street parking (11-4-1(C)(3)), and a dead car in the lot is in the way of that. It’s a good week to sell.

Overnight, the 2:00 to 6:00 a.m. ban applies only on streets designated by ordinance (11-4-1(F)), and some blocks are resident-only from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. (11-4-3(C)).

Papers, and the drive to a yard

A title signed over at pickup is the simplest sale. If you don’t have one, name the papers you do have, perhaps registration, an insurance card or a bill of sale, and we confirm on the call how Illinois treats them for a scrap sale. Thinking of towing it to a yard yourself? Our junkyard versus pickup guide compares the two.

Where the village meets its neighbours

Chicago Ridge lies over the northeast line, with Oak Lawn beyond it, and Bridgeview is to the north. Palos Heights is southwest down Harlem, and IL 7 heads out to Palos Park. See also our Cook County coverage and all areas.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Worth

A certified letter says my car is a nuisance. What's the timeline?

Under 10-9-2(B), the village sends notice by certified mail and gives you 7 days to remove an inoperable car that's in public view on private property. After that come a citation and adjudication, and finally a court warrant for removal. Selling inside those 7 days avoids all of it, and same-day pickup is often possible.

The car's been 'under repair' in the driveway for a month. Does that count?

It can. The village defines an inoperable vehicle as one that can't run under its own power for 7 days or more because parts are removed or altered (10-9-1). Ordinary repairs have to move forward weekly, and the car must be running within 30 days. If the repair has stalled, a free tow may be the cheaper ending.

There are two dead cars behind our building. One trip?

Yes, one visit can take several vehicles. In this village 39.7% of housing units are in buildings of five or more, so two cars from one lot is an ordinary job. Clear it with the owner or the manager, tell us how many cars there are and where each one sits, and we give a separate offer for each.
