A big village, every kind of pickup
Oak Lawn counted 58,362 residents at the 2020 Census, which makes it the 22nd most populous municipality in Illinois. A place that size has every sort of pickup: houses with drives (68.9% of units are single-unit buildings), apartment lots (22.9% of units are in buildings of five or more), downtown blocks on 95th Street and the streets around Advocate Christ Medical Center. We treat them all the same way. The tow is free, the offer is agreed on the phone before the truck sets off, and you’re paid when the car is loaded.
Three snow rules with three triggers
The village snow code is detailed, and each rule starts at a different point.
- 1 inch on the ground: alternate-side parking under § 11-5-5(B). No parking on the even-numbered (north or west) side on even days, or the odd-numbered (south or east) side on odd days, from 6 a.m. to 3 a.m. Snow thoroughfares are left out.
- 1 inch on a snow route: no parking on posted snow routes until they are cleared, and cars left there are towed at the owner’s expense (§ 11-5-5(D)). 95th Street is a snow route all the way from Pulaski Road to Harlem Avenue, and segments of 52nd, Austin, Oak Park, Kostner, Keeler, Kenton and Menard Avenues and 91st, 103rd, 107th and 109th Streets are on the list too.
- Snow removal emergency: when snow falls at 1 inch an hour and reaches 4 inches, all street parking is banned for 24 hours or until the street is plowed (§ 11-5-5(A)).
A dead car can’t move for any of these. If the forecast looks bad, get it onto the drive or book a pickup before the first inch; we return calls within 15 minutes.
Plates, not stickers
There’s no village sticker to keep up, because Oak Lawn repealed its vehicle licence chapter (Ord. 18-10-25). The state plate is another matter. Under § 11-5-15, a car can’t be parked on a public street, alley or village lot without a valid current state plate and sticker. Section 11-10-1 counts a vehicle as abandoned if it’s in disrepair and undrivable, lacks a current annual licence or tag, or has sat for 7 consecutive days and looks deserted. Section 11-10-2 applies that to the owner’s own private property too, and the police chief may order removal from private property after 7 days. The nuisance list in § 8-1-3(R) also covers inoperable or abandoned vehicles left outside a garage on public or private property.
95th Street, Cicero and the downtown blocks
95th Street (US 12 and US 20) crosses the village as a four-lane road, and Cicero Avenue (IL 50) meets it inside Oak Lawn. Downtown is 95th Street between Tulley Avenue and 55th Court, rebuilt from 2002 around the Metra SouthWest Service station. The overnight rule in § 11-5-6(A) bans street and alley parking from 1:00 to 7:00 a.m., but passenger vehicles and residents’ non-commercial vehicles parked near home are exempt, so a resident’s car on a residential street isn’t caught by it.
What changes the offer, and the papers
If the catalytic converter has already been taken, or the car has been stripped, say so on the call. Our converter guide explains why it matters. For paperwork, a title is the straightforward case. Without it, tell us which papers you hold and we’ll confirm on the call whether Illinois accepts them for a scrap sale.

My plates expired and the car won't start. Can it stay on the street?
No. Section 11-5-15 makes it unlawful to park on a public street, alley or village lot without a valid current state registration plate and sticker. Under § 11-10-1, a car with no current annual licence or tag can also count as abandoned. Push it onto the drive if you can, then book the free tow.
Which side is even for snow days?
Go by the house numbers. In Oak Lawn the even-numbered side is the north or west side of the street, and the odd-numbered side is south or east. From 1 inch of snow, no parking on the even side on even dates or the odd side on odd dates, between 6 a.m. and 3 a.m. Snow thoroughfares follow their own rule.
My mail says Oak Lawn but I'm not sure I live in the village. Does it matter?
Not to us. ZIP codes 60455 to 60459 accept Oak Lawn as an alternate city name, and 60455, 60458 and 60459 list Bedford Park as well, so the address on an envelope doesn't always match the village line. Give us the street address and the pickup works the same. Bedford Park's local rules are on our Bedford Park page.
