A 1946 plan of courts and townhouses

American Community Builders announced Park Forest in 1946 as a planned community for returning veterans, with planner Elbert Peets designing part of it, and the village was named an All-America City in 1954 and again in 1976. William H. Whyte wrote about it in “The Organization Man”. The plan still shapes how cars are parked. Only 61.7% of homes are detached houses, 23.6% are attached townhouses, and 14.6% are in buildings with two or more units, including the ten-storey Juniper Tower and Garden House. About two in three occupied homes are owner-occupied.

That means plenty of junk cars sit in shared courts, guest spaces and apartment lots rather than private drives. Those are normal pickups. Clear it with the association or the building manager, tell us the space, and keys aren’t required.

Flatbeds on Park Forest’s residential streets

Park Forest keeps heavy vehicles off its residential streets, but makes room for a truck with a job to do. Under § 102-46(b) and (c), tow trucks, dump trucks, buses and second-division vehicles over 8,000 pounds may not be on residential streets or driveways except while serving the premises. Section 102-106 bars trucks over 8,000 pounds from signed streets except for a one-block pickup or delivery. A junk car collection is exactly that kind of visit: the flatbed from Orland Hills arrives, loads and leaves.

When Orchard Drive floods under the railroad

Orchard Drive is the main north-south collector, and it passes under a Canadian National rail overpass. The county’s hazard plan notes that the underpass floods and becomes impassable. It also names Thorn Creek Estates, about 70 households with a single road in and out over a Thorn Creek culvert that can flood, and about 32 homes whose access can be cut by overflow from a Richton Park detention pond. If your street is one of these, mention it when you book so the driver can plan the route around it.

A car that stalled in floodwater is often a junk car already. Our article on hydrolocked engines covers what happens when water gets into an engine.

72 hours at the curb, 7 days in view

On the street, § 102-46(a) allows no vehicle to stay in the same spot for more than 72 consecutive hours, and § 102-43 lets police tow one left longer. Off the street, § 66-107 defines a damaged, inoperable or junk vehicle as one that can’t be driven under its own power for at least 7 days, and makes it unlawful to keep one in public view on public or private property. It has to go into a garage or similar enclosed structure, and every vehicle must be parked on an improved surface. After written notice, the property owner has a deadline to do that, or the village tows and impounds the car.

In a townhouse court with no garage, that leaves one practical answer. The free quote form gets you an offer, and we call back within 15 minutes.

From US 30 to Thorn Creek

The village is roughly bounded by US 30 (Lincoln Highway) on the north, Western Avenue on the east, Central Park Avenue on the west and Thorn Creek on the south, with the Eastgate subdivision east of Western. The old EJ&E main line, now Canadian National, cuts through the middle, and Metra Electric stops just outside at Richton Park, 211th Street and Matteson.

Olympia Fields borders Park Forest on the north, Chicago Heights on the east, University Park on the south, and Richton Park and Matteson on the west. Steger is on the same run. The village is assigned to our Cook County page, though its southern edge reaches Will County, and the areas we serve page has the full map.

Title or other papers for a Park Forest sale

If the title is in hand, sign it at pickup. If not, tell us what you can find, like registration, an insurance card or a bill of sale, and we check on the call whether Illinois rules let your car be sold for scrap with those.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Park Forest

The registration on our dead car ran out. Can it wait on the street for the truck?

Not in Park Forest. Section 102-45 bars parking on any roadway in the village without current state registration, and it also rules out unpaved surfaces and any cleaning or repair work on the roadway. Keep the car on the driveway or in your assigned space, and the driver loads it there. Expired plates do not stop a sale.

Can I put for-sale signs on two old cars in my driveway?

Only one. Section 66-1 bars parking a vehicle with a For Sale sign on public property, and having more than one vehicle for sale on private property requires a dealer license. If both cars are junk, an offer from us on each is simpler: one flatbed visit can take both, and each offer stays open for as long as you need.

Our home is in the Will County part of the village. Is that covered?

Yes. Park Forest is mostly in Cook County, with a small southern part in Monee Township, Will County. Free removal and payment at pickup work the same on either side of the county line. Our Will County page covers the neighbouring towns south of the line.
