Matteson in brief

Matteson is a Cook County village in Rich Township with 19,073 people (2020 census) on a little over 9 square miles of mostly flat ground. It’s one of the far south suburbs, and it sits where two big roads meet: Lincoln Highway (US 30) running east-west and I-57 running north-south.

The housing is mixed more than in the Will County towns west of here. About 77 percent of homes are owner-occupied, two-thirds are detached houses, roughly 15 percent are in buildings of two or more units, and about 4 percent are mobile homes. So a Matteson pickup might be a driveway, an apartment lot or a mobile home park. For a lot or a park, clear access with the manager first.

The roads into town

  • Lincoln Highway (US 30) is the main east-west road.
  • Cicero Avenue (IL 50) is the second north-south route after I-57.
  • Harlem Avenue (IL 43) clips the western corner of the village.
  • Governors Highway, Crawford Avenue and Vollmer Road carry most of the rest.

If you’re giving directions, the former Lincoln Mall site at Cicero and US 30 makes a handy landmark. Metra Electric stops at Matteson station and at 211th Street, and Pace Route 357 runs through.

The rule that matters most

Matteson’s code doesn’t give a dead car much time. Any abandoned, wrecked, dismantled, inoperative, rusted or junked car parked or stored on public or private property for more than 72 hours is a public nuisance. The only exceptions are cars inside a building, cars held by a business, race vehicles and antique collections. The village counts a car as “junked” when it has no unexpired plate and is wrecked, dismantled, inoperative or abandoned.

Before removing one, police post a notice and send it by registered mail, giving at least 10 days. The owner or occupant then pays for the removal. The village’s property guide adds that every vehicle must sit on an approved hard surface (no grass), that vehicles over 1.5 tons aren’t allowed on residential property, and that cars with no plates, no current tags or in disrepair are reportable. After a 3-inch snowfall, street-parked cars are ticketed and towed.

Seventy-two hours goes fast. If a crash set off the airbags, our guide to deployed airbags helps you make the repair-or-junk call quickly. If the car isn’t worth the repair, free junk car pick up clears it before the clock runs out. Start on the offer form and we call you back.

Around Matteson

Matteson borders Olympia Fields and Park Forest to the east, Country Club Hills and Tinley Park to the north, Frankfort to the west and Richton Park to the south, with Flossmoor just past Olympia Fields. Up Harlem Avenue to the northwest is Orland Hills, where our trucks start. The rest of the south suburbs are on our Cook County page, the towns across the county line are on the Will County page, and the full pickup map has everything else.

Your papers

Most sellers hand over a signed Illinois title and that’s it. If yours is missing, tell us what you have, for example the registration, an insurance card or a bill of sale. Whether those are enough for a scrap sale in Illinois depends on the car, and we’ll confirm it with you before we send a truck. See our no-title guide for the details.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Matteson

How long can a dead car sit at my house in Matteson?

Seventy-two hours. Matteson's code treats an abandoned, wrecked, dismantled, inoperative or junked car parked on public or private property for longer than that as a nuisance, unless it's inside a building. Police give at least 10 days' notice before the village removes it, and the owner pays for the removal.

What counts as a junked car in Matteson?

The village defines it as a car with no unexpired license plate that is also wrecked, dismantled, inoperative or abandoned. An abandoned, unlicensed inoperable car also has its own line on the village's fine schedule, so the plates matter as much as the engine.

Do you also come to Olympia Fields?

Yes. Olympia Fields used to share this page and now has its own pickup page with the village's overnight parking and truck rules. Removal there works the same as in Matteson, a free tow and payment at pickup.
