A village built where two highways cross

Frankfort grew up around a railroad station in the 1850s and incorporated in 1879. Today it has 20,296 people (2020 census) on almost 16 square miles, mostly in Will County’s Frankfort Township, with a slice in Rich Township on the Cook County side. Two U.S. highways cross in the middle of it: La Grange Road (US 45) running north-south and Lincoln Highway (US 30) running east-west. Laraway Road (County Road 74) crosses the south end.

Those two highways are the reason this page has a section on where the truck can stop. Village code bans parking along Lincoln Highway from Wolf Road all the way to Harlem Avenue, and along La Grange Road from Nebraska Street down to Laraway Road. A car that dies on either stretch has to be loaded from somewhere else.

Where the driver stops

Most Frankfort pickups are simple. About 95 percent of homes are owner-occupied and four in five are detached houses, so the usual job is a driveway with room for the flatbed at the curb.

A few streets come with truck limits, and it helps to know them before the driver turns in:

  • Center Road (Nebraska Street to the CN tracks) and Locust Street (US 30 to Colorado Avenue) are signed “No Thru Truck Traffic.”
  • Dralle Road between Harlem and Ridgeland is closed to semis.
  • 80th Avenue from Sauk Trail to Laraway Road has a 12-ton limit.

If your car is on or near one of those, give us the nearest cross street and the driver takes the shortest legal approach.

Downtown is its own case. The historic center around the Frankfort Grainery and Breidert Green sits along the Old Plank Road Trail, and if the car is parked there, a driveway or a back lot is the easiest place to load from.

The clock on a dead car

Frankfort runs a dedicated chapter of its code on abandoned vehicles, and it has teeth:

  • A partially dismantled, nonoperating, wrecked or junked car can’t be left on any street or highway in the village.
  • On private property it may stay 30 days at most (48 hours on village property). Cars inside an enclosed building, or at a business that lawfully stores them, are exempt.
  • The police chief can impound after 10 days’ written notice, posted on the car and mailed to the owner and the property owner.
  • Fines apply per offense, and every day counts as a new one.

Two parking rules round it out. No vehicle may stay parked on a public street or alley for more than 48 hours in a row, and once 2 inches of snow fall, every car must be off village streets until removal is finished. The village also doesn’t allow parking on grass that wasn’t built for it, so a car pushed onto the side yard is still a problem.

Put those together and a car that stopped running in November is a better sale than a winter project. Selling it with a free pickup and payment on the spot takes one call, or a minute on the offer form.

Around Frankfort

Frankfort has a long list of neighbours. Richton Park is to the east; Tinley Park, Frankfort Square and Matteson are to the northeast; Mokena and New Lenox are to the west; and Monee and University Park are to the southeast. Harlem Avenue (IL 43) ends at Lincoln Highway right on the Frankfort and Matteson line. For the rest of the county, see our page on Will County junk car pickups, and for everywhere else the trucks go, the pickup map.

Papers we ask about

A signed Illinois title is all a normal sale needs. If the title is gone, tell us what’s in the glove box: registration, insurance card, an old bill of sale. Illinois law, not our preference, decides which of those can carry a scrap sale, and we’ll tell you on the call whether your set works. The Illinois title brands explainer covers junk and salvage titles if yours carries a brand.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Frankfort

How long can a car that won't run stay in my Frankfort driveway?

Thirty days. Frankfort's abandoned-vehicle chapter lets a partially dismantled, nonoperating, wrecked or junked car stay on private property no longer than that, unless it is inside an enclosed building. After that, the police chief can give 10 days' written notice and then impound it, and every day it stays counts as a separate offense.

My car died on Lincoln Highway. Can the truck load it there?

Parking is banned along US 30 from Wolf Road to Harlem Avenue, so the driver won't stand there. Get the car pushed or towed onto a side street or into a lot if you safely can, or call the police non-emergency line if it is blocking traffic, then send us the new location.

We live in Frankfort Square. Do you pick up there?

Yes. Frankfort Square is the unincorporated area just north of the village, in Frankfort Township, and pickups there run the same way: free tow, paid at pickup, papers checked on the call.
