Next door to Orland Hills

Tinley Park’s western edge runs along Orland Hills, and Orland Hills is where our trucks start each day. For a seller on the west side of the village, the flatbed comes from the next village over rather than from across the county. The two places even share mail: ZIP codes 60477 and 60487 serve Tinley Park and also accept Orland Hills as a city name, and Pace Route 364 runs through both. If you’ve never been sure which side of the line your address is on, it makes no difference to us. The tow is free either way, and nothing comes off the offer for it.

Our Orland Hills page covers the home village. This one is about the much larger town beside it: 55,971 people at the 2020 Census, on 16.19 square miles split between two counties.

Roads in from the north and west

Most pickups start from one of four roads:

  • 159th Street (US 6) clips the northern corner of the village.
  • La Grange Road (US 45) passes the western corner and has an I-80 junction inside Tinley Park.
  • Harlem Avenue (IL 43) is the main north-south road, with its own I-80 junction.
  • I-80 crosses the village from east to west.

Inside the village, 80th Avenue carries north-south traffic through the Cook County part, while 171st Street and 191st Street are the long east-west county roads. 171st Street lies entirely inside the village, so a cross street on it pins a car down quickly. The Metra Rock Island line stops twice, at Tinley Park station on Oak Park Avenue and at the 80th Avenue station, and either one is a handy landmark for the driver.

The 2 a.m. rule

Tinley Park clears every street from 2:00 to 5:00 a.m., every night, snow or no snow (§ 73.09). That catches people out when a car dies on the way home and has to wait at the curb overnight. The village takes overnight parking requests online, one vehicle per date and up to three nights running. File one, then book the pickup.

Winter makes it tighter. When more than an inch of snow is on the street, § 73.11 allows only quick stops, three minutes to drop off a passenger or thirty to load property, while the snow falls and for eight hours afterwards, until removal is complete. Police may tow. A non-runner belongs on the drive before the forecast turns.

Alley loading works as long as 10 feet stay open and no driveway entrance is blocked (§ 73.05).

What the village treats as a nuisance

Section 98.02(F) lists “non-functioning and unlicensed motor vehicles” among the things that become a nuisance when collected or left anywhere in the village outside what the code allows. On the public way, § 90.20 calls a car abandoned when it is in disrepair or can’t be driven, or when it has sat for seven days or more and looks deserted. Before a tow, § 90.23 requires notice by personal delivery or registered mail plus a notice-of-intent-to-tow sticker on the car, after which the owner gets seven days to ask for a hearing.

Seven days is more than enough to get a Tinley Park car sold and gone. Send the quote form the day the sticker appears and we call back within 15 minutes. Our page on what free pickup includes lists what the driver does on site.

Two counties, one Illinois sale

Most of Tinley Park lies in Cook County, across Bremen, Orland and Rich townships, and a slice sits in Will County’s Frankfort Township. The county makes no difference to the sale, which is an Illinois transaction either way. With a title, you sign it to us when the car is loaded. Without one, list what you have, perhaps the registration, an insurance card or an old bill of sale, and we check on the call how Illinois treats that set of papers for a scrap sale. Our guide to selling without a title goes into more detail.

Around the village

Oak Forest lies over the northeast line, Country Club Hills is to the east, and Matteson borders the southeast corner. Orland Park, Mokena, Frankfort and Frankfort Square close the circle. More towns on the same run are on our south and southwest Cook County page, and the full service map covers the rest.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Tinley Park

Can I park the car on the street with a for-sale sign while I wait for offers?

Not in Tinley Park. Section 73.10 bars parking on a street for the purpose of showing a vehicle for sale. Keep the car in the drive or the garage while you think it over. Our offers don't expire, so there is no reason to put a dead car out on the road to attract buyers, and the driver loads it from wherever it sits on your property.

We're in a townhouse with a shared drive. Will the association let a tow truck in?

Usually, if you ask first. In Tinley Park 76.8% of homes are single-unit buildings but only 54.6% are detached houses, so plenty of sellers live in attached townhouses with shared drives or guest spaces. Clear the pickup with the association or the manager, tell us which space the car is in, and the driver does the rest. Keys are not needed.

Does a car I'm scrapping need a village vehicle sticker first?

No. Since the 2023 amendment to § 71.01, the Tinley Park vehicle licence is free, offered every other year from April 1, and nobody is required to get or display one. What matters for the sale is state paperwork. Tell us whether you have the title, and if not, which papers you do have, and we confirm on the call which Illinois route fits.
