The licence line in § 132.11

Oak Forest draws its abandoned-vehicle rule more widely than you might expect. Section 132.11 counts any vehicle without a current valid licence as abandoned, along with cars that are wrecked, dismantled or inoperative and cars that haven’t moved in seven days, and it declares them a nuisance on public or private property. The same section says no abandoned vehicle or its parts may stay in public view for more than seven days, no car in major disassembly or disrepair may stay on residential property for more than seven days, and police may remove an abandoned vehicle seven days after a warning, with the property owner paying for removal. Cars kept inside a building, licensed operable historic vehicles over 25 years old and wrecking or storage businesses are exempt.

Put plainly, a dead car with lapsed plates sitting on a driveway is the case the code was written for. The city also wants a current city sticker on every vehicle housed in Oak Forest, which means a car that will never run again still costs money to keep legal. Selling it ends both problems, and the first step is the two-step offer form; expect our call within 15 minutes of sending it.

I-57, Cicero and Central Avenue

The truck reaches Oak Forest on 159th Street (US 6) or Cicero Avenue (IL 50), which both run through the city, while Harlem Avenue (IL 43) crosses only a short stretch inside the limits. I-57 cuts across the southeast corner just north of the I-80 interchange, with exit 346 at 167th Street and exit 348 at US 6. Central Avenue is what locals would call the main street: City Hall, the police and fire stations, the library and Oak Forest High School are all on it. 147th Street, 167th Street and Ridgeland Avenue are the other through roads.

Two posted restrictions matter for a pickup. Cicero Avenue is no parking from 149th Street down to Route 6, and 163rd Street between Long Avenue and Central Avenue is posted against parking from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. If the car died on either, mention it so the driver can plan where to stop. The former Oak Forest Hospital grounds at the southeast corner of 159th and Cicero, and the Metra Rock Island station at the same crossing, make easy reference points.

Houses, and the bigger blocks

About 68.4% of Oak Forest homes are detached single-family houses and 82.4% are owner-occupied, so most pickups happen on a private drive. The rest of the picture is the 26.7% of units in buildings of two or more, most of them in buildings of five or more. For those, ask the manager before the truck arrives and give us the space number.

Oak Forest has no citywide overnight ban for cars, but it is particular about where a car stands. There’s no parking on the parkway between a house and the road (§ 73.03(A)), none on a sidewalk from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (§ 73.02), and boats and trailers stay off the streets from midnight to 8:00 a.m. (§ 73.06). After a snowfall of more than 2 inches, a car may sit across the sidewalk on a single-family driveway apron for 24 hours, which is a good spot to load from.

What sets the offer, and the papers

Each car is priced on its own merits: its condition, what’s missing and what it’s made of. Our guide to what sets an offer explains the factors. On paperwork, the title is the easy route. If it has gone missing, tell us what you can find (registration, insurance card, a bill of sale) and we check on the call what Illinois accepts for a scrap sale in your situation.

Bremen Township neighbours

Oak Forest shares borders with Midlothian, Markham, Country Club Hills, Orland Park and Tinley Park. Crestwood lies to the north, and Robbins sits beyond Midlothian. For the rest of this side of the county, see our Cook County page or the areas we serve.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Oak Forest

The city sticker has lapsed and the car won't start. How long do I have?

Under § 132.11 a car with no current valid licence, or one that is inoperative, is treated as abandoned, and it may not stay in public view for more than seven days. Police can remove it seven days after a warning, and the property owner pays for the removal. A free tow from us settles it before that bill arrives.

I live in an apartment building. Can the truck load from the lot?

Yes. In Oak Forest 23.0% of housing units are in buildings of five or more, so lot pickups come up regularly. Get the manager's agreement, tell us the space, and leave the keys if you have them (no keys is fine too). City code lets commercial vehicles stop on a street only while loading or doing business there (§ 73.09), and that is exactly what a pickup is.

The car is in a commuter lot near the Metra station. Can you collect it there?

If it's yours, yes, but tell us exactly which lot. The city runs commuter lots at or next to 15846 Cicero Avenue, 15700 Cicero Avenue and 15900 Oak Avenue (§ 73.03(C)), and nearby streets such as Forest Avenue, Grove Avenue and 161st Street have permit zones. The driver needs the lot, the row and the colour of the car.
