A village of condo and apartment lots

Crestwood is unusual for the southwest suburbs. Only 42.5% of its homes are single-unit buildings, while 56.2% sit in buildings of five or more units, according to the latest five-year census estimates. Even so, 76.2% of homes are owner-occupied, which tells you many of those units are condos. For a junk car, that changes where the pickup happens: it is less often a driveway and more often a numbered space in an association lot.

That works fine. Before the truck comes, let the manager or the association know a tow is booked, and send us the building, the lot entrance and the space number. Keys help but aren’t required, and a car that won’t roll is still a normal pickup.

The village also skews older. The 2020 median age was 48.5, and 24.7% of residents were 65 or over. If you’re clearing out a car for a parent who no longer drives, the same steps apply, and the paperwork question is covered in the FAQ below.

The notice, and the 10th day

Crestwood treats an inoperable car left in public view on public or private property as a public nuisance (§ 94.081(K)). Inoperable here means the engine, wheels or other parts have been removed, altered or damaged for seven days or more so the car can’t run. Short repairs of up to three consecutive days are exempt, as are cars kept inside a building, operable historic vehicles at least 25 years old and wrecking or junk businesses. When police or Code Enforcement find one, they issue a notice of impending tow, and the car is booked for towing on the 10th day.

Ten days is enough to sell. Request a quote and a call comes back within 15 minutes. Our free pickup page lists what the driver handles once there, and how a sale works, step by step covers the rest.

Owner repairs outside a building are capped at three consecutive days too (§ 94.081(J)(2)), so a long driveway project runs into the same rule.

Cicero Avenue, Cal Sag Road and the 127th Street bridge

Cicero Avenue carries IL 50 and IL 83 together through Crestwood, from 147th Street in Midlothian up to 127th Street in Alsip. IL 83 also follows Cal Sag Road northwest through the village toward Palos Heights. The nearest Tri-State entrance is the Cicero Avenue interchange (exit 12) at 127th Street in Alsip, and inside the village 127th Street crosses the Cal-Sag Channel on a bridge, a handy reference if your car is near the water.

There is no train station in the village; Midlothian’s Metra stop is the closest. Pace routes 383 and 385 run up to Midway.

Overnight hours and the one-inch rule

Every public way in Crestwood is off-limits for parking from 2:00 to 6:00 a.m. (§ 77.02(Q)). After more than an inch of snow, the street is for stopping only: a few minutes for passengers, half an hour for property, from the start of the snowfall until 8 hours after it ends and on until plowing is done (§ 77.04(D)). Only passenger cars seating seven or fewer may stay on the street beyond loading time (§ 77.04(B)), and a car may not be parked there to advertise it for sale (§ 77.04(C)).

Papers, and the towns around Crestwood

The sale is an ordinary Illinois one. Hand over a signed title if you have it. If not, list your papers on the call and we confirm whether Illinois accepts that combination for a scrap sale.

Alsip lies to the north, Oak Forest to the south, and Midlothian along the southern side, with Robbins next door to the east. For more of the area, see our Cook County coverage and every area we serve.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Crestwood

A notice of impending tow went on my car. What happens next?

Crestwood schedules the tow for the 10th day after the notice (§ 94.081(K)(2)). That leaves time to sell the car instead of losing it to the village tow. Send us the details the day the notice goes up. Same-day pickup is often possible, though we never promise a time slot, and the offer stays open while you decide.

Can the car wait on the grass beside the building?

No. Section 94.081(J)(1) bars parking or storing any vehicle on grass or gravel in a front, side or rear setback, and an inoperable car left in public view on private property is a nuisance under § 94.081(K). Keep it on paved parking until the truck arrives. If it can't be moved at all, tell us exactly where it sits.

I'm selling a parent's car after they moved out of the condo. What papers count?

Start with what's in the folder: title, registration, insurance card or a bill of sale. Tell us what you find and whose name is on it, and we check on the call how Illinois rules treat that set of papers for a scrap sale. If there's no title at all, our no-title guide explains the options.
