Water east of Kedzie
Flooding is the local wrinkle in Robbins. The county’s hazard mitigation plan says the three blocks east of Kedzie Avenue to Utica, between 137th and 139th Streets, flood in almost every rain or melt event. Reeves and Maxey Court go under in extreme events, and urban flooding reaches most of the village.
A car that has sat in that water may not be worth fixing. Water in the cylinders can lock an engine, and wet wiring fails in odd ways for months. If you are wondering whether a flooded engine can be saved, read our piece on hydrolocked engines in junk cars before you pay for a teardown. If it can’t, we buy it as it is, water damage and all, and the tow is free.
Two chapters, two clocks
The Robbins code deals with dead cars twice. Chapter 5, Article X calls an old, wrecked, stripped or junked car that is not in safe running condition, licensed or not, “abandoned” once it hasn’t been able to run for 10 days (§ 5-401). Keeping one outside a building for 10 days or more, on any street or any property, is a nuisance (§ 5-402). The owner has to move it into an enclosed building or out of the village, and must dispose of it after written notice (§ 5-403). Police can remove and impound it and bill the owner (§§ 5-404, 5-407).
Chapter 14 runs a faster track. For abandoned or inoperable vehicles on public property, the village gives seven days’ written notice and then tows at the owner’s cost (§ 14-243). The same seven-day notice applies on private property, with repair shops and car dealers exempt (§§ 14-272, 14-273). Either way, a sale before the notice runs out costs you nothing.
Getting a truck into Robbins
The Tri-State runs through Robbins without an exit inside the village, so the trucks come in on the arterials: Kedzie Avenue, Pulaski Road, 137th Street and the Midlothian Turnpike. Some side streets are posted against trucks under § 14-79, with an exception for a pickup on the block. If the car is near the Metra Rock Island station, or along Pace route 359 on Kedzie, use that as your landmark.
A village with its own history
Robbins was incorporated in 1917 and named for the developer Eugene S. Robbins. It was the first municipality in the North governed entirely by African-American officials, and it is home to Robbins Airport, described as the country’s first black-owned airport. Most homes are detached houses, about two thirds by recent census estimates, so the usual pickup is a car in a drive or at the curb.
Bordering towns and the rest of the map
Robbins borders Crestwood, Midlothian, Blue Island, Alsip and Posen. Our Cook County page explains how the trucks cover the south and southwest suburbs from Orland Hills, and the service area list shows every town. When you are ready, request your offer and we call back within 15 minutes.
Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Can I fix the car in my driveway instead of selling it?
Think about the rules first. Robbins § 5-402 treats car repairs in residential areas outside an enclosed building as a nuisance, so a long driveway rebuild can draw a notice of its own. If the repair bill is close to what the car is worth, our guide on fixing versus junking an old car helps you decide.
My street is posted for no trucks. Can your truck still get to me?
Section 14-79 bars trucks from streets posted by ordinance, but it makes an exception for a truck making a delivery or pickup on that block. Collecting your car is that kind of stop. Give us the address and the nearest cross street and the driver plans the shortest way in.
What papers do you need?
Bring the title if you have it; you sign it at pickup. If it's missing, tell us what you can find, such as a registration card, an insurance card or a bill of sale. Illinois rules decide which papers work for a scrap sale, and we confirm what fits your car on the call, before the truck is booked.
