Section 90.06 and the 24-hour curbside repair limit
Plenty of junk cars begin as a repair that never got finished. In Markham the street is not the place for it. Section 90.06 allows work on a car in the public right-of-way only to make it operable, and only for 24 hours after the breakdown. Towing a car onto the right-of-way in order to work on it is not allowed at all.
That forces the question early: fix it in a garage, or let it go? Our guide on whether an old car is worth fixing or junking shows how to set a repair estimate against the car’s scrap value. If letting it go wins, the online quote form gets you an offer that stays open while you think, and we call back within 15 minutes.
Section 90.01: seven days on a Markham driveway
On private land the clock runs longer, but it does run. Under § 90.01, a car on private property in public view with parts removed or disabled for seven days or more is a public nuisance, and after notice the owner has to dispose of it. Cars kept inside a building, historic vehicles over 25 years old and cars on the premises of a business that wrecks or junks vehicles are exempt.
That rule touches nearly everyone, because 94.6% of Markham’s homes are detached houses and three in four are owner-occupied. A dead car here usually sits on a driveway, in plain view of the street.
Hydrant sides, Kedzie Avenue and the 3 to 5 a.m. ban
Markham’s parking schedule (Chapter 71, Schedule I) has several rules that catch a car that won’t move:
- Hydrant side. No parking at any time on the side of a street with fire hydrants, except on Wolcott and Honore between 161st and 162nd.
- 3 to 5 a.m. No parking on any city street, every night (Schedule I(B)).
- Main roads. No parking at any time on Kedzie Avenue, Crawford Avenue, Central Park or Wood Street, on the north side of 167th Street, or on parts of 159th Street.
- Snow. Once 2 inches cover city streets, no parking on either side of any street, and cars can be towed.
Schedule I(G)(3): tow trucks get under two hours
Schedule I(G)(3) keeps semis, tractors, trailers and tow trucks off residential streets, driveways and vacant lots. It carves out stops of under two hours for pick-ups, deliveries and moving disabled vehicles, which covers a junk car collection.
Prairie, interstates and the cities around
I-57, I-294 and I-80 each cross part of the city, and 159th Street carries US 6. Kedzie Avenue, Crawford Avenue (Pulaski Road), 167th Street, Dixie Highway and Wood Street do the rest. There is no passenger rail station inside the limits, so landmarks help: the Canterbury Shopping Center sits between Richmond Avenue, 159th Street and Kedzie, and about 500 acres of the Indian Boundary Prairies, including the Gensburg-Markham Prairie, lie within the city.
Markham shares a boundary with Posen, Midlothian, Oak Forest, Country Club Hills, Hazel Crest and Harvey, with unincorporated Bremen Township to the west. Our flatbeds leave from Orland Hills. The Cook County pickup page covers the wider south suburbs, and the map of areas we serve covers the rest.
Illinois papers for a Markham scrap sale
With a title, you sign it over at pickup. Without one, tell us what you have: a registration card, an insurance card, an old bill of sale. Illinois rules decide which papers can carry a scrap sale for your car, and we confirm that on the phone before anyone drives over.
Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Is a tow truck even allowed on my residential street?
For a pickup, yes. Markham's Schedule I(G)(3) bars semis, tractors, trailers and tow trucks from residential streets, driveways and vacant lots, but it makes an exception of under two hours for pick-ups, deliveries and moving disabled vehicles. Collecting your junk car is that kind of short stop: the flatbed arrives, the car goes on, you get paid, and the truck leaves.
Can I leave the old car on the empty lot next door until I sort it out?
No. Section 90.16 of the Markham code prohibits abandoning a vehicle on a vacant lot or on private property, and a car moved there is still a problem, only on someone else's land. Leave it where it is, on your own driveway, and book a pickup. Our offer has no expiry date, so you can get the number first and pick a day after.
The car has been half taken apart. Will you still buy it?
Yes. A car with missing parts, an engine pulled or wheels off is still a junk car, and we buy them in any condition. Tell us honestly what is missing when you ask for the offer, because the driver checks the car against your description before payment. A missing catalytic converter or engine changes the number, so it is better to know it up front.
