Pickups that start around the corner

Orland Hills is small: 6,893 people on 1.15 square miles, set between Orland Park and Tinley Park in Orland Township. It started life in 1961 as the village of Westhaven, and its edges grew out toward 159th Street and 171st Street over the next decade. For a seller here, that size is the whole point. Our day begins in the village, so the truck has a short drive to reach you.

That is also why this page exists: we buy junk cars across Chicago and the south suburbs from the same base, and this is the town closest to it. Give the driver a landmark like Lake Ashbourne, Lake Lorin or Kelly Park plus the nearest cross street, and the car is easy to find.

About four in five homes in the village are single-family houses, so a typical pickup is a car in the drive or at the curb in front. The rest of the housing is apartments and townhomes, and lot pickups there work fine once the manager knows a tow truck is coming.

Getting a flatbed to the village

  • 159th Street (US 6) runs along the north side. It is a state route that IDOT maintains, and the side streets just off it are where a flatbed usually stops.
  • La Grange Road (US 45) is the main north-south road on the west, with I-80 a short run south.
  • 171st Street marks the southern edge.
  • 88th Avenue is the one street to flag: village code bars trucks over 8,000 pounds gross from parking on it. If your car sits on 88th, tell us the closest cross street or a driveway and the driver loads from there.

Pace Route 364 runs along 159th Street, which helps if the car died somewhere else and you need a ride back after meeting the driver.

When the village starts counting

Orland Hills defines an inoperable car as one with parts removed or changed so it can’t run under its own power for at least six months, unless it’s kept inside a building. A car left in disrepair and undrivable, or one that hasn’t moved for seven days and looks deserted, counts as abandoned. Either kind is a nuisance under the code whether it sits on the street or on private property, and the owner has 72 hours after written notice to dispose of it.

Two more rules catch people out. You can’t park on unpaved residential ground (the code wants asphalt or concrete), and you can’t park between the curb and the sidewalk. A dead car on the lawn or the parkway is a ticket waiting to happen.

The village also requires a vehicle sticker for cars kept by residents. There’s an honest point in that: a car that will never run again doesn’t need another sticker year. If yours is in that state, free junk car pick up costs less than the sticker does.

Next door: Tinley Park and Orland Park

Orland Park lies to the north, and Tinley Park is on the other side of the village. If the car is parked in Orland Hills but registered in one of them, nothing changes: the pickup works the same whichever town is on the paperwork. East along 159th Street is Oak Forest, west past Orland Park is Homer Glen, across I-80 is Mokena, and down Harlem Avenue to the southeast is Matteson. For the full picture of where the trucks go after leaving the village, see our page on pickups across suburban Cook County or the list of every town we serve.

Papers for an Illinois sale

Have the title? Sign it over at pickup and you’re done. No title? Tell us which papers you can find, such as a bill of sale, the registration or an insurance card. Illinois rules decide which of those work for a scrap sale, so we check your case on the call before anyone books a truck. Our no-title guide walks through the options, or go straight to the offer form and we’ll ask on the callback.

Want to know who you’re dealing with before you call? Our About page explains how the business runs from here.

Questions we hear in Orland Hills

The village left a notice on my dead car. How quickly can it go?

Orland Hills gives the owner 72 hours after written notice to get rid of an inoperable or abandoned car. Send the details the day the notice appears. Because our trucks start in the village, a same-day pickup is often possible, and the tow costs you nothing.

Can you load a car from an apartment lot or a townhome drive?

Yes. About 15 percent of homes in the village are in buildings of five or more units, so lot pickups come up often. If the space is assigned or the lot is gated, clear it with the manager or the association first and tell us where the car is parked.

It snowed overnight. Can the car stay on the street until you arrive?

Not once an inch has fallen: the village bans street parking from that point until removal is finished. If the car can't be moved, ask the Orland Hills Police Department about a special parking permit and mention the snow when you call us so we can plan around it.
