New Lenox at a glance

New Lenox is a Will County village of 27,214 people (2020 census) on about 15.7 square miles of the I-80 corridor. It started as a Rock Island Railroad town in the 1850s and incorporated in 1946. Today it is mostly owner-occupied homes (about 92 percent), and around eight in ten are detached houses, so a typical pickup here is a car in a driveway in a subdivision off one of the main roads.

Its neighbours are Joliet to the northwest, Ingalls Park to the west, Mokena to the east, Frankfort to the southeast and Manhattan to the south. North across I-80 is Homer Glen.

Highways and the roads off them

Two interstates meet here. I-355, the Veterans Memorial Tollway, begins at I-80 inside New Lenox (I-80 exit 140), and I-80 exit 137 lands on US 30, which village code calls Maple Street. That makes New Lenox one of the easier towns on our map to reach.

Inside the village, the layout is a ladder:

  • Maple Street (US 30) is the main east-west road.
  • Cedar Road, Gougar Road and Nelson Road are the main north-south streets.
  • US 6 (Southwest Highway) crosses near the I-355 interchange, by Silver Cross Hospital, which moved to New Lenox from Joliet in 2012.

There are two Metra stations: New Lenox on the Rock Island line at US 30 and Cedar Road, and Laraway Road on the SouthWest Service, also on Cedar. If the car is parked near either, mention it so the driver knows where to look.

Village rules worth knowing

New Lenox has a code chapter for abandoned or wrecked vehicles. A partially dismantled, nonoperating, wrecked or junked car can’t be left on any street. On private property the limit is 30 days (48 hours on village property), unless the car is inside an enclosed building. After that, the police chief can order removal within 10 days of a notice stuck to the car or mailed to the owner, and then impound it.

Snow is measured at a specific corner. When 2 inches fall at Maple Street and Cedar Road, parking is banned on every village street until snow removal is complete, and cars left out get towed at the owner’s expense. Streets also clear for posted cleaning and plowing. A car you were planning to deal with in spring is a tow bill waiting for the first storm, which is why we’d rather give you a number now, with no expiry on it.

There’s no village vehicle sticker to worry about: New Lenox dropped the requirement in 2011.

Manhattan, just south

Our old Manhattan page used to point here, because the two villages sit side by side and Manhattan’s high school students attend Lincoln-Way West in New Lenox. Manhattan now has a page of its own, with its stricter winter rule and the US 52 approach. A pickup that starts in New Lenox and ends there is one short run down the road.

Titles and papers

Sign the Illinois title over to us at pickup and that’s the paperwork. If it’s lost, list what you still have (registration, insurance card, a bill of sale from when you bought it) and we’ll say on the call whether Illinois rules allow a scrap sale with those. The full rundown is in cash for a car with no title. Up the road, the Lockport page covers the river towns, the Will County hub shows the rest of the county, and the full pickup map covers Cook, DuPage and Indiana too.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in New Lenox

Is this the New Lenox in Illinois?

Yes. New Lenox is a village in Will County, Illinois, on the I-80 corridor southwest of Chicago. An older version of this page had the wrong state in its address, which is why the link changed. Every pickup on this page is in Illinois.

Can the truck load from the alley behind my house?

Usually, yes. New Lenox allows alley parking only for loading, as long as 10 feet stay clear for traffic. Tell us if the alley is narrow or has wires hanging low so the driver knows before turning in.

Do you go down to Manhattan?

Yes. Manhattan sits just south of New Lenox on US 52, and we buy junk cars there on the same terms. Its winter rule is stricter than most: no street parking after 1 inch of snow or a quarter inch of ice until clearing is finished.
