Lockport on the river

Lockport is a city, not a village: incorporated in 1853, with 26,094 people at the 2020 census, in Lockport and Homer townships of Will County. It sits on the east bank of the Des Plaines River, just north of Joliet, with Lemont up the river. The town takes its name from the Illinois and Michigan Canal, which had its headquarters here; the remains of Lock No. 1 and the 1838 Gaylord Building are still beside the canal north of downtown.

That river and canal are the first thing to tell a tow driver about. A pickup on the west side of the water and one on the east side can look close on a map and still need different bridges.

The roads we take

Lockport’s own truck-route list in the city code is a good map of how a flatbed gets around:

  • State Street (IL 171), which bends northeast onto Archer Avenue on the north side
  • 9th Street / 159th Street (IL 7), which crosses State Street at 9th
  • Briggs Street and Division Street
  • Gougar Road between 163rd and 167th streets, and New Avenue from State Street to the city limits

From the tollway, I-355 has two ramps at the Lockport and Homer Glen line: exit 4 at 159th Street and exit 7 at Archer Avenue and 143rd Street. IL 53 and historic Route 66 run through as well. Metra’s Heritage Corridor stops at Lockport station with weekday rush-hour trains, and Pace routes 832 and 834 connect to downtown Joliet.

Homes here are about 85 percent owner-occupied, and close to one in five is a townhome or other attached unit, a larger share than in Mokena, Frankfort or New Lenox. Lot and shared-drive pickups come up often. Clear the spot with your association, send the details on the offer form, and we take it from there.

Lockport’s street rules are tight

Here is what the city code says about street parking:

  • No parking on any curbed public street between 3 and 6 a.m.
  • No parking or storing a vehicle on a street, alley or public way for more than 24 consecutive hours.
  • Every car parked on a street, parkway or sidewalk must show current state registration.
  • Snow ends street parking from the moment it starts falling until 8 hours after it stops, and over 2 inches the ban lasts until removal is complete.

For a car that doesn’t run, that combination is hard to live with. The city’s abandoned-vehicle chapter defines an inoperable car as one with parts removed, changed or damaged for at least seven days so it can’t run under its own power, on public or private property. The owner gets a pre-tow notice by mail or hand delivery, plus a sticker on the car, and has 7 days to request a hearing. Separately, owners and occupants have to keep outdoor premises clear of inoperative vehicles. Repair lots have a limit too: on parking areas in nonresidential districts, open storage of cars awaiting or under repair is capped at one month unless the Zoning Administrator grants more time for hardship (§ 156.092(E)(5)). If your car is sitting at a Lockport shop, our guide to a car stuck at a repair shop covers what you owe before it can leave.

Titles come up a lot here

Because a street-parked car needs current registration here, paperwork is worth sorting out early. In short: a signed Illinois title is the cleanest sale. Without one, gather what you have (registration, insurance card, any bill of sale) and we’ll tell you on the call whether Illinois rules let the sale go ahead. The no-title guide explains the options, and if the title says SALVAGE or JUNK, read what Illinois title brands mean for a sale first.

Lockport’s neighbours

Lockport borders Bolingbrook to the north, Lemont to the northeast, Homer Glen to the east, Joliet to the southeast, Fairmont to the south, Crest Hill to the southwest, Plainfield to the west and Romeoville to the northwest. Southeast past Joliet is New Lenox, and beyond it Mokena. The Will County page covers the rest of the county, and the pickup map shows every town we tow from.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Lockport

My plates expired and the car is on the street. Is that a problem?

In Lockport it is. City code requires any vehicle parked on a street, parkway or sidewalk to show current state registration, and no car may stay on a public street more than 24 hours straight. Expired registration doesn't stop us buying the car; tell us what papers you have and we'll confirm on the call.

There's a pre-tow sticker on my car. What now?

Lockport's abandoned-vehicle chapter gives the owner 7 days after the notice to request a hearing in writing before the tow. If you'd rather sell than argue, call us that day. Same-day pickup is often possible, and once we've loaded it, the car is ours.

Is a car over 25 years old treated differently?

Lockport's definition of an inoperable vehicle leaves out historic vehicles over 25 years old, along with cars kept inside a building. That exemption is about the city's nuisance rule, not about selling. We buy old cars in any condition either way.

Does the snow rule really start when the snow starts?

Yes. No street parking from the time snow begins falling until 8 hours after it stops, and if more than 2 inches fall, the ban runs until removal is finished.
