Joliet junk car removal on both banks of the Des Plaines
Can I get a car with expired plates removed for free in Joliet?
Yes. Joliet's code treats a car without valid plates or registration as inoperable even if it runs, and bars storing one on any property unless zoning allows it. Cash For Junk Cars Junk My Car Inc tows it free from your Joliet address and pays you at pickup. Tell us which papers you have and we confirm the sale on the call.

West side, east side, far west side
People in Joliet place themselves by the Des Plaines River. Locals say “west side” or “east side” for the two banks, “far west side” for the part of the city that crosses into Kendall County, and “Central Joliet” for the stretch west of the river and east of I-55. Downtown sits in the river valley. When you call, which bank the car is on is our first question, and the nearest cross street is the second.
The city is big: 150,362 people at the 2020 census, the third-largest in Illinois, and the seat of Will County. It spans nine townships, more than any other Illinois city. About 69.5% of homes are detached houses and 73.7% are owner-occupied, with 20.5% in buildings of two or more units.
Plates count, not only engines
Joliet’s definition of an inoperable car in § 19-232 goes beyond broken engines. It covers a car that is dilapidated, wrecked, dismantled or taken apart so it can’t be legally or safely driven, and also a car without valid plates or registration on display, with expired or suspended registration included. Under § 19-233, nobody may store an abandoned or inoperable vehicle on any property in the city unless the zoning allows it.
If a notice of intent to tow lands on a car on private property in public view, § 3-150 gives the owner 3 days to request an emergency review or 7 days to ask for an administrative hearing. On a highway, a car can go 24 hours after a police tow notice is posted, and on other public property after 7 days’ written notice (§ 19-235). A sale settles it faster than either: send the details on the free quote form and we call back within 15 minutes.
Exits and one-way streets
| Road | Where it meets Joliet |
|---|---|
| I-80 | Exits 127 Houbolt Rd, 130 IL-7 / Larkin Ave, 131 Center St, 132 US-52 / IL-53 / Chicago St, 133 Richards St, 134 Briggs St |
| I-55 | Exits 253 US-52 / Jefferson St, 257 US-30 / Plainfield Rd |
| IL-53 | Chicago St; downtown it splits into one-way Scott St (north) and Ottawa St (south) |
| US-30 / US-6 | US-30 east on Cass St; US-6 east on Collins St |
| IL-171 | Starts as Collins St and heads north to Lockport as State St |
The city also names truck routes in § 19-14, and § 19-12 keeps second-division vehicles over 12 tons on them. The airport off Jefferson Street near I-55 and the Joliet Transportation Center, end of the line for Metra’s Heritage Corridor and Rock Island trains, are handy landmarks.
Forty-eight hours on the street, and the snow ban
No car may be parked or stored on a street, alley or public way for more than 48 hours straight (§ 19-138). When 2 inches of snow fall within 24 hours, street parking stops until removal is done, and a car left out can be towed at the owner’s expense (§ 19-142). Some blocks are posted “parking by permit only” under the residential permit program (§ 19-151). A car that won’t start fails all of these sooner or later.
Up the river and over I-80
Lockport is upriver to the north, with IL-171 running between them, and Homer Glen lies to the northeast. New Lenox is on the east side, and US-52 heads southeast toward Manhattan. Plainfield, Rockdale, Elwood and Wilmington round out the edges. Our trucks come from Orland Hills, and same-day pickup in Joliet is often possible, though we never fix a time before the call. See the areas we serve for every town.
Titles, brands and missing papers
A signed Illinois title is all the paperwork in the simple case. If the title says JUNK or SALVAGE, read what Illinois title brands mean first. If the title is gone, tell us what you still have (registration, insurance card, bill of sale) and we’ll say on the call whether Illinois rules let the sale go ahead with those; the no-title guide explains more. Payment comes at pickup by Zelle, Cash App, cash or another digital payment, and the free tow isn’t deducted.
Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

I rent, and the ticket for the dead car came to me. Why?
Section 19-233 lets the city cite the property owner, the vehicle owner, or the tenant or lessee when an abandoned or inoperable car is stored on a property. Only the car's owner can sell it, though. If it's yours, we can buy it and tow it free. If it belongs to someone else, they need to be the one who sells and signs.
Which streets are exempt from Joliet's snow rule?
Section 19-142 lists three: Raynor Avenue to Center Street from Mason Avenue (Route 30, Plainfield Road) to Buell Avenue; Raynor Avenue to Center Street from Jefferson Street to Marion Street; and Pine Street from Western Avenue to Division Street. Everywhere else, after 2 inches in 24 hours a parked car can be towed at the owner's cost.
The car is at a shop downtown. Can you pick it up there?
Yes. Repair-shop lots are fine as long as the shop knows we're coming. Downtown, Route 53 splits into one-way Scott Street northbound and Ottawa Street southbound, so give us the shop's street and cross street. You are paid at pickup either way.
