A red notice and seven days

McCook’s code marks dead cars in red. A vehicle that has had parts removed or been disabled for seven days or more, and sits in public view on public or private property, is a nuisance under § 82-112. The village posts a red “Notice to Remove” on it, and the owner then has seven days before the village tows it.

A separate section, § 82-111, makes it unlawful to keep wrecked, junked, abandoned or disabled vehicles, or their parts, on any premises other than a properly zoned yard. Police can tow those after getting an administrative warrant. If a notice is already on the windshield, send us the car’s details and we book the free removal with your deadline in mind.

Quarry, locomotive works and a handful of homes

McCook is an industrial suburb. Parts of the Vulcan Materials McCook Quarry, UOP and the Electro-Motive Diesel locomotive plant all sit within the village, and only 249 people lived there at the 2020 census, fewer than in any other Cook County municipality. The housing sample is tiny, about a hundred occupied homes, split between detached houses and buildings with two or more units.

We load from company lots as readily as from driveways, and we take junk vans and trucks along with cars. If you’re weighing a drive to a scrapyard against a pickup, our junkyard guide compares the two.

Streets where nothing parks

Some McCook streets allow no parking at all: Joliet Road at all hours, 53rd Street within 300 feet of Joliet Road (§ 82-78), and 55th Street from East Avenue to Joliet Road, plus East Avenue from Joliet Road to 55th Street (§ 82-79). Once 2.5 inches of snow has fallen, standing or parking is barred on every street until it is cleared (§ 82-76). Where residential permit areas are designated, the village sticker registered to the unit serves as the permit, with two visitor permits per unit (§ 82-82).

A car that dies on one of those no-parking streets has nowhere legal to wait, so call as soon as it stops.

Heavy trucks and the shortest route

Vehicles over 8,000 pounds may enter residentially zoned parts of McCook only by the shortest route to a pickup or delivery there (§ 82-40(b)). Our driver comes in on the most direct street to your door and leaves the same way, which keeps the visit short for the neighbours as well.

Roads and bordering villages

First Avenue (IL-171) runs through the village, with 47th Street and East Avenue as the main local roads, and Joliet Road and West 55th Street carry the old Route 66 line. Pace Route 330 serves the village; there is no passenger rail stop. McCook is one of the longer drives for our Orland Hills trucks, so an early call helps.

McCook shares borders with Lyons, Summit, La Grange, Hodgkins, Brookfield and Countryside, and Forest View lies a little farther east. The county hub for Cook and our service areas page list the rest.

Paperwork in a few lines

Hand over the title at pickup if you have it. If you don’t, tell us which documents you can find, such as a bill of sale, a registration card or an insurance card. Illinois decides what works for a scrap sale, and we confirm on the phone which route fits your car.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in McCook

Our company has a dead van at a McCook yard. Can you take it?

Yes. We buy non-running vans, pickups and work trucks as well as cars, and a business yard is a normal place to load. Have whoever controls the gate expect the truck, and tell us about any hours the yard is locked. If there are several vehicles, one visit can take them all, each with its own price.

The address on our paperwork says La Grange. Is that a problem?

No. McCook has no post office of its own, and its ZIP code, 60525, carries a La Grange mailing address; even the Electro-Motive Diesel plant uses one. Give us the street address and the nearest cross street and the driver will find it. The removal is free either way.
