Junk car removal in La Grange, north and south of the BNSF tracks

Can I keep a non-running car in my La Grange driveway until I decide?

Only inside a garage. La Grange's § 6-4-1(f) bars leaving a non-operating, wrecked or junked vehicle on any private property unless it is in an enclosed building. Cash For Junk Cars Junk My Car Inc tows it out of La Grange for free, from the driveway or garage, and pays you at pickup in cash or by Zelle or Cash App.

Section 6-4-1(f) and the driveway

In La Grange, a car that won’t run can’t simply sit in the driveway while you think it over. Section 6-4-1(f) says no partially dismantled, non-operating, wrecked, junked or discarded vehicle may be left on any private property. A dead car left on La Grange’s own village property gets just 48 hours. Either way the car is declared a public nuisance and can be towed. The exemptions are narrow: an enclosed building, or a lawful business need.

Title 7 adds two definitions in § 7-1-1, an “abandoned vehicle” (one in disrepair and unable to be driven, in public view) and a “hazardous dilapidated motor vehicle,” and § 7-1-5 bars both, each day counting as a separate offense. If the garage is already full, the practical answer is a free quote today.

Two to six, every night

No car may park on any La Grange street from 2 to 6 a.m., any day, unless the village allows it (§ 6-4-1(e)). Guests and special cases can get one night at a time, up to five nights a month, through the police non-emergency number, and the village links an online overnight pass. Separately, no vehicle may stay on a street, alley or right-of-way for more than 48 hours in a row (§ 6-4-1(g)), and village lots close from 2 to 6 a.m. except decal spaces (§ 6-4-30). After 2 inches of snow, streets are off limits for 12 hours unless the snow is cleared sooner (§ 6-4-25).

Freight on the north side

Three BNSF main tracks run through the north end of the village, carrying freight as often as every 10 minutes off-peak, and a CSX and Indiana Harbor Belt line crosses La Grange as well. Metra’s BNSF Line stops at La Grange Road and Stone Avenue. Tell us whether the car is north or south of the tracks and the nearest crossing, and the driver can choose an approach that avoids a long wait at the gates.

Downtown’s four US routes

La Grange Road (US-12, US-20 and US-45) is the village’s main north-south street, and it meets Ogden Avenue (US-34) downtown, so four US routes share one intersection. La Grange Road reaches I-55 south of the village, and Ogden meets I-294 to the west. Bluff Avenue on the east side traces the old Lake Chicago shoreline. From Orland Hills this is one of the longer trips we make, so an early call helps.

La Grange borders Lyons to the east and McCook, home of the Electro-Motive Diesel plant that uses a La Grange mailing address. Indian Head Park is to the southwest, and Hodgkins sits farther down La Grange Road. The Cook County section and the areas we serve list the rest.

Houses, condos and papers

About two in three La Grange homes are detached houses (67.7%), and 20.1% are in buildings with five or more units. For a condo or apartment lot, tell the building manager a tow truck is due and give us the space number. On paperwork, Illinois rules apply: a signed title is simplest, and if you don’t have it, tell us which papers you do have so we can confirm on the call. The no-title guide walks through the Illinois options in more detail.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in La Grange

Can the car stay in the garage until you arrive?

Yes. A car kept inside an enclosed building is exempt from § 6-4-1(f), so the garage is the right place for it. On pickup day, clear the space behind the garage door so the driver can draw the car out. Keys aren't needed, and flat tyres or a dead battery don't stop the load.

A guest's car died on our street overnight. What are the options?

La Grange bans street parking from 2 to 6 a.m., but special-circumstance or guest parking is allowed one night at a time, up to five nights a month, by calling the police non-emergency number; the village also links an online overnight pass. Use that night to arrange the pickup. Anything left on a street more than 48 hours in a row is subject to towing under § 6-4-1(g).
