Three homes in four are mobile homes

Hodgkins is a small village, 1,500 people at the 2020 census, and census estimates say 75.2% of its housing units are mobile homes. Another 17.0% are detached houses. So the typical junk car here sits on a pad beside a mobile home, along a park lane, or in a short driveway.

Mobile home parks are no trouble for us. Tell the park office or manager that a tow truck is coming, give us the lot number and the entrance to use, and make sure no other car blocks the junker. Keys aren’t needed. If a neighbour has a dead car too, one visit can take several, each with its own offer.

Rules aimed at cars that can’t be licensed

Hodgkins goes after unlicensable vehicles directly. Under 7-2-2(A), possessing a vehicle for use that the Secretary of State can’t license is a nuisance. The property code, at 5-3-2(W), also lists an “unsightly yard” where junk, wrecked or disabled cars or trucks accumulate. And every resident’s vehicle needs a village vehicle license (7-2-3).

A car with a dead engine and no plates checks every one of those boxes. A free pickup takes it off the lot without a towing bill, and you are paid before it leaves.

Snow, sweeping and the odd/even rule

After 2 inches of snow, East Avenue, Joliet Road, LaGrange Road and 67th Street close to parking until the snow is fully removed, along with every street signed “No Parking At Any Time,” and cars left there can be towed on the spot (7-5-4). From November 1 through April, a 2-inch snowfall also brings an odd/even rule to other streets: park on the side matching the date, or in a driveway (7-5-4(E)). On sweeping days, signs go up at least four hours ahead and the swept side closes (7-5-5(E)).

There’s one more street rule worth knowing: you can’t park a car on a Hodgkins street to show it for sale (7-5-5(C)).

Between the Stevenson and the Tri-State

Two expressways cross the village, I-55 (the Stevenson) and I-294 (the Tri-State), along with La Grange Road (US-12, US-20 and US-45) and Joliet Road, the old Route 66. East Avenue, 75th Street and Santa Fe Drive fill in the local grid. Big landmarks make directions easy: the UPS hub at 1 UPS Way, the Vulcan Materials quarry that Hodgkins shares with McCook, and The Quarry shopping center. Hodgkins is farther out than our south-suburb stops, so the earlier you call, the better the odds of a same-day pickup.

Neighbouring villages

Hodgkins borders Justice, Willow Springs, Bedford Park, McCook and Countryside. Summit lies to the northeast, and Indian Head Park sits just north of the I-55 and I-294 junction. The Cook County listing covers the rest of the suburbs, and the service area overview adds DuPage, Will and Indiana.

Papers and your offer

Paper rules come from the state. A signed title is the simplest case. With no title, tell us what you hold (a bill of sale, the registration, an insurance card) and we check on the call whether Illinois accepts it for selling your car as scrap. Start with the quote form; a call back follows within 15 minutes.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Hodgkins

It snowed in November and the dead car is on the wrong side of the street. What now?

From November 1 through April, once 2 inches falls, Hodgkins only allows parking on the side that matches the day's odd or even date, or in a driveway (7-5-4(E)). A car that won't start can't switch sides at midnight. Call us as soon as the snow stops, and if it's on a posted snow route, sooner.

The car has no plates and could never pass registration. Is that a problem here?

In Hodgkins it is. Code section 7-2-2(A) calls possessing a vehicle that the Secretary of State cannot license a nuisance, and the property code lists yards where junk or disabled cars pile up as nuisances too. We buy unregistered and unplated cars for scrap; tell us what papers you have and we confirm on the call what Illinois accepts.
