Summit junk car removal on both sides of the 59th Street tracks

How long can a junk car sit in a Summit driveway?

Seventy-two hours, unless an exception applies. Summit's code (6-5-1) calls a wrecked, junked or inoperative vehicle left on private property longer than that a nuisance. Cash For Junk Cars Junk My Car Inc tows those cars out of Summit and Argo free and pays you at pickup, in cash or by Zelle or Cash App.

North of the tracks, and Argo to the south

Summit is split by the Indiana Harbor Belt tracks at 59th Street. North of them is the older village. South is Argo, the company-town area around 63rd Street that was annexed in 1911 and still keeps its own business district on 63rd. The Corn Products plant, now Ingredion, went up just south in 1907 and today sits in Bedford Park, and the Argo Crossing rail junction runs along the southwest boundary.

When you book, tell us which side of the tracks the car is on and the nearest cross street. A freight train at a crossing can turn a trip around the block into a long wait, and the driver can plan around it with that information.

Seventy-two hours, then a nuisance

Section 6-5-1 covers private property. A rusted, wrecked, junked, partly dismantled, inoperative or abandoned vehicle left there for more than 72 hours is a nuisance, plated or not, though some exceptions apply. Yards with junked or disabled vehicles are listed as nuisances in the same section.

The traffic code adds its own definition. An abandoned vehicle includes one in disrepair, unable to run and unmoved for seven days or more, on public or private land (10-24-1), and causing one is unlawful (10-24-2). Summit’s pre-tow step (10-24-5) is a window sticker plus a mailed notice, so a dead car usually gets a warning first. Three days goes quickly, which is why a quote request is worth sending the day the car quits.

Alleys, curbs and overnight hours

An alley is not a waiting area: no vehicle may be parked in any alley (10-11-2). On the street, you can’t park a car to show it for sale or to wash, grease or repair it (10-11-3). The 4 to 6 a.m. parking ban applies only on Archer Road, 63rd Street and Harlem Avenue (10-11-5). Snow over 2 inches closes the posted snow routes until removal is done (10-13-9), and above 3 inches parking is restricted on every street until it is cleared (10-13-12).

Floodplain cars

Most of Summit lies in the Des Plaines River floodplain. When high water gets into a car’s engine or interior, the repair estimate can climb past what the car is worth. If you’re stuck on that question, our guide to fixing versus junking lays out the trade-offs. We buy the car either way, water damage included, and the tow is free.

Archer, Harlem and the Stevenson

Archer Avenue (IL-171) crosses the village. At 55th Street it bends north into a short freeway that crosses both canals and the Stevenson on its way to Lyons. Harlem Avenue (IL-43) also meets I-55 in Summit, and the Summit station for Metra and Amtrak sits at Archer and South Center Avenues. Summit is a farther run from our Orland Hills base than the south suburbs, so morning calls have the best chance at same-day removal.

On our map, McCook is to the west, Lyons to the north and Forest View to the northeast. Bedford Park lies south, with Bridgeview beyond it. More suburbs are on the Cook County page, and the areas we serve list covers everything else.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Summit

Can I fix the car at the curb first and decide later?

Not in Summit. Section 10-8-16 bars vehicle repairs on the roadway or public right of way except in an emergency, and 10-11-3 bars parking a car on the street to wash, grease or repair it. If a garage repair isn't realistic, get our offer first; it doesn't expire, so you can set it next to a shop estimate.

My village sticker ran out on June 30. Does that affect the sale?

Not the sale. Summit's sticker is a village vehicle license with a year running July 1 to June 30, and residential permit zones only issue permits to stickered cars (10-13-10). For the sale itself we ask about the title or your other papers. A dead, unstickered car parked in a permit zone should still be moved soon.

I can't find the title. Can I still sell a car in Summit?

Often, yes. Tell us what you do have, for example a bill of sale, a registration card or an insurance card. Illinois rules decide which of those can support a scrap sale, and we confirm it for your car on the call before anyone is sent. The no-title guide covers the state rules.
