When the Des Plaines rises

The National Weather Service gauge for the Des Plaines River at Lyons puts flood stage at 18 feet. At 22 feet the water tops the east-bank levee in Lyons; at 23.5 feet it reaches the top of the west-bank levees in Lyons and McCook; at 24 feet, numerous homes near the river are threatened. A car parked low when the river climbs that high can end up with water in the cabin, the wiring or the engine.

We buy those cars. Flood damage can make a car a poor candidate for repair, but a scrap offer rests on things like weight, parts and condition, and our guide to what sets a junk car offer goes through them. The tow costs nothing whether the car sits in a dry garage or a muddy driveway.

How long a dead car can stay

Lyons keeps separate clocks for public and private ground. A car is inoperable when its engine, wheels or parts have been removed or altered so it can’t run under its own power (§ 9-10-1), and it is abandoned if it hasn’t moved for seven days and looks deserted (§ 9-10-2). Abandoned, wrecked, inoperable or junked vehicles are a public nuisance unless they are inside a building or at a licensed business in the right zone (§ 9-10-3).

On a street or other public property the limit is 72 hours, with written notice 72 hours before a tow (§ 9-10-4). On private property it is seven days, then a seven-day notice, after which police may remove the car and the property owner or occupant pays (§ 9-10-5). That matters to landlords, because a tenant’s dead car can turn into the owner’s bill.

Plates, driveways and the winter ban

Three street rules catch dead cars here. Any car parked on a village street must carry current state registration (§ 9-6-2). Front and side yards are off limits except a hard-surfaced driveway (§ 9-6-5(N)). And from November 15 to April 1, through streets and transit streets close to parking from 1 to 7 a.m.; once snow passes 2 inches, they stay closed until eight hours after it stops and plowing is done (§ 9-6-7). In an alley, a parked car must leave 10 feet clear and keep off driveways (§ 9-6-6(C)).

Ogden, First Avenue and Joliet Road

Ogden Avenue (US-34), Harlem Avenue (IL-43) and First Avenue (IL-171) all run through the village, with 39th and 47th Streets carrying traffic east and west. Historic Route 66 follows Joliet Road, 43rd Street, Prescott Avenue and part of Harlem. The Chicago Portage National Historic Site, just north of I-55 along Harlem, is an easy landmark to give our driver. Lyons is a longer haul from our Orland Hills start than the south suburbs, so morning calls have the best shot at same-day removal.

The village borders McCook, Summit, Forest View and Stickney, plus Brookfield and Riverside. For the wider county, see junk car pickups across Cook County; every town we serve is on one list.

Before the truck is sent

If the title is yours, it is signed at pickup and that settles the paperwork. Missing title? Tell us which papers you hold, such as a bill of sale, a registration card or an insurance card. Illinois sets which ones count for a scrap sale, and we confirm it for your car before the truck goes out. Ask for your offer and we call back within 15 minutes.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Lyons

My car took on water. Should I try to start it before you come?

Better not. If water reached the air intake, cranking the engine can bend parts inside it, the problem our hydrolocked engine guide describes. Leave it as it is, tell us roughly how high the water came, and we make an offer on the car in that state. Removal is free either way.

There's no paved spot for the dead car. Where can it wait?

Lyons doesn't allow parking on a front or side yard unless it is a hard-surfaced driveway (§ 9-6-5(N)), and any car on a village street needs current state registration (§ 9-6-2). An inoperable car also gets just 72 hours on the street. If there's nowhere legal for it to sit, call us first and we look for the earliest pickup we can offer.

I live in one of the apartment buildings. Can you load from the parking lot?

Yes. About a fifth of Lyons homes, 22.5% in census estimates, are in buildings with five or more units, and lot pickups are routine for us. Tell the manager a tow truck is due, give us the building and space, and make sure nothing is parked tight against the car.
