Five days on the street, then a tow

Stickney’s abandoned-vehicle article is short and strict. Sec. 14-272 makes it unlawful to abandon a car on a highway, or to abandon or store an inoperable one on any property that isn’t the owner’s own. For cars on a street or other public property, Sec. 14-274 starts with a posted notice plus a certified or registered letter. A car that hasn’t moved in five consecutive days is deemed abandoned and towed on day six, and the owner owes an administrative penalty on top of tow and storage costs.

On someone else’s private property, the police chief can order removal after five days (Sec. 14-276). If the dead car is parked at a relative’s house or in a friend’s driveway, that clock runs too. Five days is enough time to get an offer, but not enough to wait and see.

Houses with driveways, alleys with rules

Stickney is a village of single-family homes. Of 2,523 housing units counted in 2020, census estimates put 80.0% as detached houses, and 83.3% of households own their home. Every resident lives west of Ridgeland Avenue. A Stickney pickup is usually a driveway, a garage or the curb out front.

Alleys come with two rules. Parking in one is banned at any time unless the car is fully on paved private property beside it (Sec. 14-145), and the village says driving through an alley only to get from one street to another isn’t allowed. Our driver uses the alley only to reach your garage or pad, loads, and leaves. If the junker is on a paved spot off the alley, tell us; that can be the cleanest load of all.

Pickups, vans and the evening rule

The village transportation page bars trucks of any size, and RVs, from village streets from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and all weekend, and commercial vehicles can’t park from midnight to 7 a.m. If your junker is a dead pickup or work truck parked out front, it is on the wrong side of that rule most evenings. We buy trucks, vans and SUVs as well as cars, and our step-by-step selling guide shows how a sale runs from call to payment.

Snow on Pershing Road

Once more than 2 inches of snow falls, odd and even side restrictions apply from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. (Sec. 14-147). Past 6 inches, Pershing Road closes to parking from midnight to 5 a.m. When the village president declares a snow emergency, alternate-side rules start eight hours later, and moving a car for the village comes with a relocation fee (Sec. 14-8). A car that won’t start can’t follow any of that, so a winter breakdown is a good reason to sell sooner.

The way in, and the villages around Stickney

Harlem Avenue (IL-43) runs through the village, which makes it the easiest reference point to give the driver. Village Hall and the police station are on Pershing Road. Hawthorne Race Course straddles the line with Cicero. From our Orland Hills base this is a longer trip than the south suburbs, so morning calls have the best chance at a same-day pickup.

Berwyn lies north, Cicero to the northeast, Forest View to the south and Lyons to the west, with McCook and Riverside also close by. More towns are on the Cook County pickup page, and the service area list shows everything else we cover.

Papers for a Stickney sale

The title, if you have it, is signed to us at pickup. Without one, tell us which papers you hold (bill of sale, registration, insurance card) and we confirm on the phone which of them Illinois allows for selling your car as scrap. Nothing is settled until that call, so have whatever you’ve got at hand.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Stickney

A visitor's car broke down in front of my house overnight. Can it stay?

Not without permission. From 2 to 6 a.m. only village residents may park on Stickney streets. The police can grant a temporary exemption for guests, but you must ask before 2 a.m., and it is capped at three days in a row and ten days a month. Use that time to set up the free pickup; our first trucks leave at 6:30 a.m.

Could I put a For Sale sign on it and leave it out front?

Not on the street. Sec. 14-146 bars parking a vehicle on a Stickney street to display it for sale. A car that doesn't run rarely finds a buyer that way in any case. Our offer is for the car as it sits, keys or no keys, and it doesn't expire, so you can hold it up against anything else you're offered.
