Junk car removal for Berwyn's bungalow blocks

Can you take a junk car out of a Berwyn garage that opens onto an alley?

Yes. Cash For Junk Cars Junk My Car Inc removes junk cars from Berwyn garages, driveways and curbs, and the tow is free. If the garage door faces an alley, the driver loads there and drives off, since Berwyn's code bars unattended cars in alleys. You are paid at pickup in cash or by Zelle or Cash App.

Bungalow blocks, and where the car usually sits

Berwyn has a claim few suburbs can match. Wikipedia credits it with the most significant collection of Chicago-style bungalows in the country, the product of strict building codes during its boom years. The smaller bungalow-type homes cluster on the north side around Roosevelt and Cermak Roads, with some larger houses toward the south.

That housing tells us most of what a pickup needs. In census estimates, 52.4% of Berwyn’s homes are detached houses and 28.3% are in two- to four-unit buildings. So the junk car is normally in a detached garage, on a short apron, or at the curb out front. Say which when you book the free removal, and mention it if the garage opens to the rear.

The 3 a.m. rule

Berwyn doesn’t ban overnight parking outright. It narrows it. From 3 to 6 a.m., unless a sign says otherwise, only cars showing a Berwyn on-street vehicle license, a visitor pass or a temporary visitor pass may park on the street (§ 484.08). Households that keep a car off the street during those hours can buy the license at a lower rate, and a car on that rate is fined if it turns up at the curb overnight.

A car that won’t start breaks that plan on the first night. If yours died on the street with the off-street rate, or with no Berwyn license at all, every night it stays out is another chance at a ticket.

Alleys and snow routes

Section 480.04 is one line long: no unattended vehicle may be parked on any part of an alley. You can’t push a dead car out back and leave it there to wait for us. Our driver can still load from the alley, because the truck is attended the whole time, and then pull straight out.

Snow brings a second set of limits. Once 6 inches accumulates, parking ends on the snow routes listed in § 480.05, which include Cermak Road, East Avenue, Harlem Avenue, Oak Park Avenue, Ogden Avenue, Pershing Road, Ridgeland Avenue and 26th Street, until crews clear them curb to curb. Roosevelt Road closes at just 2 inches. A citywide snow emergency can be declared at 12 inches, and then other streets switch to odd and even sides from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

When Berwyn calls a car abandoned

Chapter 468 treats a vehicle as abandoned if it is too broken down to drive, or if it hasn’t moved for seven days in a row and looks deserted. Leaving one on a street, or on private or public property in public view, isn’t allowed unless the property belongs to the car’s owner. Towing follows a certified-mail notice, and the owner has 48 hours or two business days to ask for a hearing first (§ 468.03). Selling before that letter comes is simpler than going to a hearing.

Getting in from Orland Hills

Berwyn is one of the farther stops for trucks that start out in Orland Hills, so calling in the morning gives the best shot at same-day removal. Harlem Avenue (IL-43) is the main north-south road. Ogden Avenue cuts across the city on a diagonal: west of Harlem it carries US-34, which ends at that corner, and east of it the road follows old Route 66 toward Cicero. Cermak Road, Roosevelt Road, 26th Street and Pershing Road carry the east-west traffic.

On our map, Cicero lies across the east line, Stickney borders the south, and Lyons is on the west side along with Riverside, North Riverside and Forest Park. Forest View sits just past Stickney. The Cook County overview covers the rest of the county, and the full service map adds DuPage, Will and northwest Indiana.

Your papers

If the title is in your name, you sign it over when the car is loaded. Without it, list what you can find: a bill of sale, the registration, an insurance card. Illinois decides which of those can back a sale for scrap, and we tell you on the call whether yours will do. The no-title guide explains the state rules in more depth.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Berwyn

My dead car carries Berwyn's off-street license rate but it's stuck at the curb. Is that a problem?

It can be. Berwyn sells a cheaper vehicle license for cars kept off the street from 3 to 6 a.m., and § 484.08(B) fines a car on that rate if it is found on the street during those hours. A car that won't start can't be rolled back into the garage, so book the pickup early. Our trucks go out from 6:30 a.m.

Six inches of snow fell and the car is parked on Ridgeland Avenue. What happens?

Ridgeland is one of Berwyn's listed snow routes. Under § 480.05, parking there ends once 6 inches has piled up, whether or not an emergency is declared, and it stays that way until the street is cleared curb to curb. A car that can't be driven sits in the plow's path, so call before the storm if you can, or as soon as the street reopens.

The car is in a Berwyn depot lot on an overnight permit. Can you load it there?

Yes. Section 480.09 sets out the designated overnight spots, among them the depot lots, the library east lot and Vacin Fairway, each with its own permit conditions. Keep the permit valid until pickup day, give us the lot and the row, and the driver loads it from there at no cost to you.
