Fewer than three homes in ten stand alone

The village is one of shared walls and shared lots. Of its 1,845 housing units, only 27.3% are detached houses; 29.9% are attached single units such as townhomes, and 42.0% are in buildings with two or more units, including 28.0% in buildings of 20 or more. Most households own their homes (86.6%), so a condo or townhome association is often part of the picture.

The junk car is therefore usually in an assigned space, a shared garage or a townhome driveway. Let the association or property manager know a tow truck is coming, check whether the lot has posted hours for service vehicles, and give us the building and space number. A car with no keys is fine.

Seven days to “inoperable”

The village defines an inoperable vehicle as one with parts removed, or unable to move under its own power, for seven days or more, temporary repairs aside (§ 36-219). An abandoned car includes one in disrepair, or one unmoved for seven straight days that looks deserted. On the owner’s own property, either kind is a nuisance unless it stays inside an enclosed building, except while it is actually being repaired (§ 36-220(d)).

Enforcement runs through the police department, and the village FAQ lists debris such as old vehicle parts among exterior code violations. After written notice by windshield sticker plus personal delivery or certified mail, the owner has seven days to deal with it (§ 36-224), and the village can tow seven days after notice (§ 36-223). A free pickup settles it before then.

Two in the morning, and 62 snow routes

No car may park on any accepted or dedicated street from 2 to 6 a.m., any day (§ 36-113). After 2 inches of snow, all 62 named snow emergency routes close to parking until the snow is removed; among them are Acacia Drive, Frontage Road, Flagg Creek Drive, Laurel Avenue, Howard Street, Vine Street, 65th Street, 70th Place and 72nd Street (§ 36-80). A car that quits on one of them in December needs to go soon.

At the I-55 and I-294 junction

The village sits just north of the interchange of I-55 (the Stevenson) and I-294 (the Tri-State), which is listed at Indian Head Park and Countryside. Joliet Road, the old Route 66, has its own I-55 exit (276C) here, at the southern end of the Stevenson name. The corner of Joliet Road and Wolf Road, by the Lyonsville Congregational Church, is the easiest landmark to give our driver. This is among the longer runs from our Orland Hills base, so morning calls help.

Next door, Burr Ridge wraps the west and south sides, with Countryside to the east and Western Springs to the north. Hodgkins and Willow Springs are nearby in Cook County, and Willowbrook is over the line in DuPage. See the Cook County overview page or the full area list for more.

Papers for the sale

The paperwork side follows Illinois law. A title in your name gets signed over at pickup. Without one, list the papers you have, say a bill of sale, a registration card or an insurance card, and we say on the call which of them Illinois accepts for your car. Start your quote whenever you’re ready.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Indian Head Park

The car never leaves my parking space. Does it still need a village sticker?

Yes. Under § 36-179, the village license applies to residents' vehicles used on streets or alleys or parked on public or private property in the village, so a car sitting in your assigned space is covered. The decal goes on the lower right of the windshield. If the car is dead and you're still buying it a sticker every year, selling it ends that cost.

Some parts are already pulled off the car. Will you still take it?

Yes. A car with parts missing is still one we buy, and under § 36-219 it may already count as inoperable once seven days pass. Tell us what's gone, especially the catalytic converter, since that changes the offer; our catalytic converter guide explains why.
