A railroad village on the old lake shore
Canadian National runs its American headquarters in Homewood, with a large freight classification yard and major shops, and Homewood station serves Metra Electric and Amtrak’s City of New Orleans, Saluki and Illini on four tracks. Ridge Road follows the Calumet Shoreline, a sand ridge left by an ancient Lake Michigan shore, and crosses Dixie Highway in the historic downtown. The other commercial strip is Halsted Street between 175th and 183rd, and Halsted (IL 1) carries on to the I-80 and I-294 interchange.
Those make good reference points for a driver coming from our Orland Hills base. “Off Ridge Road near Dixie” or “two blocks from the station” tells the driver more than a street number on its own.
Section 40-40: seven days, then the garage
Homewood counts a car as inoperable once parts have been removed, or it has been unable to run under its own power, for at least seven days. Storing such a car, or even its parts, on any premises is a nuisance under § 40-40. Temporary repairs, cars inside an enclosed building, lawful wrecking or sales businesses and antique-plated cars over 25 years old are exempt.
After written notice, the car has to move into a closed garage. If that doesn’t happen, the village can cite both the property owner and the vehicle owner and tow and impound the car. A garage already full of bikes and boxes rarely solves that. A sale does.
Homewood’s alleys and apartment lots
Homewood has alleys, and § 40-83 sets the ground rules for them: anything parked in an alley must leave 15 feet of width clear, and nothing may block a driveway entrance, commercial loading aside. A flatbed can load from the alley behind the garage. Give us the cross streets at each end of the alley and say which garage it is.
Plenty of junk cars here are not behind a house at all. Of Homewood’s homes, 19.3% are in buildings of two or more units and 14.5% in buildings of five or more. Apartment and condo lots are ordinary pickups for us once the manager has agreed.
Posted streets, 2 to 6 a.m., and the stalled-car pass
Where signs are posted, § 40-86 bans parking on village streets from 2:00 to 6:00 a.m. without an exemption. The police can grant a temporary one for up to five days, and a stalled vehicle is among the reasons the code lists. Exempted cars must stay within 300 feet of the registered address. Snow is handled in a different section, § 40-79, which clears every public street of parked cars once 2 inches have accumulated, until the entire street is plowed.
A Homewood scrap yard run, or a free pickup?
Some sellers ask whether to take the car to a scrap yard on their own. For a car that won’t start, that means hiring a tow first and then taking whatever the yard offers at the gate. Our comparison of junkyards and home pickup sets out both routes. With us the tow is free, the offer is agreed before the truck is booked, and you get paid when the car is loaded. Hazel Crest, Flossmoor, Glenwood and the other borders
Hazel Crest borders Homewood on the west and East Hazel Crest on the north. Glenwood and Thornton lie east, with Chicago Heights and Flossmoor to the south. Country Club Hills is one village past Hazel Crest. The Cook County page has the other south suburbs we cover, and our full service area has the rest.
Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

I rent the house. Who gets cited if the dead car stays put?
Possibly both of you. Once Homewood gives written notice under § 40-40, the car has to go into a closed garage. If it doesn't, the village can cite the owner of the property and the owner of the vehicle, and tow and impound the car. If the car is yours and the house isn't, selling it before the notice deadline keeps your landlord out of it.
Our street has no overnight signs. Can the car stay out front until pickup?
The 2 to 6 a.m. rule in § 40-86 applies only where signs are posted, so an unposted street is not covered by it. Snow is a separate matter: once 2 inches have built up, § 40-79 bans parking on any public street in Homewood until the whole street is plowed. Check the forecast and book the pickup before the snow.
The title is lost. Can I still sell?
Often, yes. Tell us which papers you do have, for instance registration, an insurance card or a bill of sale. Illinois rules decide which of these can support a scrap sale for your car, and we confirm it on the phone before booking the truck. Our page on selling without a title explains the options.
