The quarry and the Tollway beneath Chicago Road
Thornton is small, about a thousand homes and 2,386 people at the 2020 census, and it is home to Thornton Quarry, one of the largest quarries in the world. The Tri-State Tollway (I-80/I-294) crosses Thorn Creek inside the village, passes under Chicago Road and State Street, and runs straight through the quarry. Its interchange with Halsted Street (IL 1) lies just west of the quarry, once the Tollway has entered East Hazel Crest.
Our drivers come in from Orland Hills, and the nearest street is what they need from you. Names that appear in the village code help pin a house down: 167th Street (Armory Drive), Vincennes Avenue, Indiana Avenue, Canal Street, Clark Street, Margaret Street and 171st Street. Pace Route 353 serves the village.
Chapter 9-10: rusted counts too
Thornton’s “Abandoned, Wrecked, Dismantled or Inoperative Motor Vehicle Ordinance” is broad. Section 9-10-3 bars parking or storing an abandoned, wrecked, dismantled, inoperative, rusted or junked vehicle on public or private property, and on private property it is declared a public nuisance. The exceptions are a car enclosed in a building and one at a licensed, properly zoned business. “Rusted” is in that list, so a car doesn’t need to be stripped to be caught.
Section 9-10-2 defines a junked vehicle as one that lacks an unexpired plate and a current village license tag and is wrecked, dismantled, inoperative or abandoned. On the street, § 9-2-7 presumes a car abandoned when it is in disrepair and can’t be driven, or has gone unmoved and unused for more than 7 days in a row and looks deserted.
Snow: two hours to clear the street
Plenty of suburbs ban parking once snow passes a certain depth. Thornton adds a deadline. Under § 9-4-2.2, after every snowfall of 2 inches or more, vehicles must be off the street within 2 hours and stay off until village snow removal is complete. A car that won’t start is the one most likely to be left behind, so if it is parked at the curb, plan the sale before winter does it for you.
Front yards, parkways and Clark Street at night
The no-parking list in § 9-4-2 includes parkways and the stretch between the front of a house and the roadway, except on a driveway. On Clark Street, both sides are posted no parking from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. between 167th Street (Armory Drive) and the Tollway (§ 9-4-2.1).
Most cars here are in driveways anyway: 81.4% of homes are detached houses and 79.6% are owner-occupied. For the 18.6% in buildings with two or more units, clear the pickup with the owner or manager first.
Papers, titles and the offer
A signed Illinois title keeps it simple. Without one, tell us what you have (a registration card, an insurance card, a bill of sale), and we confirm on the call which of those Illinois accepts for a scrap sale of your car. If the title you have carries a brand, our guide to branded titles explains what it means. The quote form takes a minute, and we call back within 15 minutes.
South Holland, Glenwood, Homewood and the rest of the ring
South Holland lies north of Thornton, with Calumet City to the northeast and Lansing to the east. Lynwood is southeast, Glenwood south and Homewood southwest, with East Hazel Crest to the west and Dixmoor to the northwest. Phoenix is on the same run. See the Cook County page for the other south suburbs and where we pick up for the full map.
Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Can the car sit on the front lawn until you arrive?
No. Section 9-4-2 of the Thornton code lists the parkway, and the area between the front of a house and the roadway, as no-parking ground unless the car is on a driveway. So a dead car can't be rolled onto the grass out front to clear the street. Keep it on the drive, or book the pickup for the street spot it is in.
It snowed overnight and the car is at the curb. How long do I have?
Not long. Under § 9-4-2.2, after each snowfall of 2 inches or more, every vehicle has to be off the street within 2 hours and stay off until the village has finished snow removal. A car that won't start can't comply on its own. Push it onto a driveway if that is safe, then call us to book the tow.
Can I put a for-sale sign in the window and leave it on the street?
Thornton bans that. Section 9-4-6 bars parking a vehicle on a street to display it for sale. If you want to see what the car is worth before deciding, our offer gives you a number without the sign, and it doesn't expire. You can take it or leave it after the call.
