South Holland’s own street numbers

South Holland numbers its streets its own way. The village grid runs three blocks ahead of Chicago’s, so Chicago’s 159th Street is South Holland’s 162nd. When you give us an address, give the village’s own street number and a cross street, and the driver will find it.

The roads in are simple. The Bishop Ford Freeway (I-94) has exit 73 at US 6 and 159th Street in the village, Close by is the I-80/I-94/I-294/IL-394 interchange, where the Tri-State Tollway ends and the Calumet Expressway begins. Inside the village, US 6 runs along 162nd Street (with segments on 159th Street and River Oaks Drive), IL 83 follows Sibley Boulevard, and State Street and Cottage Grove Avenue are the other through roads. The Chicago Southland Lincoln Oasis and the main campus of South Suburban College are landmarks most drivers know.

Inside a building, or not at all

South Holland’s rule on dead cars leaves little room. Under § 10-175, no inoperable vehicle may be parked, stored or left on any public or private property, and one that is counts as a public nuisance. The only exemptions are cars inside a building, licensed businesses in the right zones, antique vehicles 25 years and older, and public storage. Inoperable means unable to run under its own power for 7 days or more, and abandoned means in disrepair, or unmoved for 7 consecutive days and apparently deserted (§ 10-174).

There is no written grace period for a dead car on the drive. If it can’t go in the garage, ask for an offer now. We call back within 15 minutes, and the offer doesn’t expire.

Plates, stickers and the lawn

Two more rules catch owners of cars that aren’t being used. A vehicle may not stand or park on a public street without a current licence plate and, if it’s registered in the village, a current village sticker, and it may be impounded (§ 10-155.1). On a house lot, cars belong only on designated driveways or parking areas, never on the lawn, planting beds or porch, and those can be impounded too (§ 10-160).

With 95.0% of homes in detached houses and 82.8% owner-occupied, almost every pickup here is from a driveway, which is where both rules want the car anyway.

Low prairie, high water

The village was settled in 1846 by immigrants from South Holland in the Netherlands, on low ground near the Calumet River known as “de Laage Prairie”. By the 1940s the village was the “Onion Set Capital of the World”. The low ground still floods. Properties next to the Little Calumet River and Thorn Creek see overbank flooding, the record came in 2008, and the county plan names spots such as 157th and Woodlawn West, 170th and Cottage, the 162nd and Wausau underpass, and 173rd and Dodson.

A car that sat in floodwater may have a hydrolocked engine. Our hydrolock guide explains whether it’s worth saving. If it isn’t, we tow it away free.

Paperwork for a South Holland sale

The sale follows Illinois rules. A title in your name is signed over when the car is loaded. If the title is missing or in someone else’s name, tell us what you have and we confirm on the call which Illinois route fits. See selling without a title.

South Holland’s neighbours

Dolton borders the village on the north, with Riverdale beyond it. Harvey and Phoenix are west, East Hazel Crest southwest, Thornton south, and Calumet City and Lansing east. The Cook County page and our service map cover the rest of the south suburbs.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in South Holland

Our old full-size van is parked in front of the house. Is that allowed?

Possibly not. Section 10-157 keeps oversize vehicles (a wheelbase over 138 inches, length over 226.8 inches or height over 83.7 inches), boats and trailers from being stored in front of the living area of a house. Many full-size vans fall into that class. If it no longer runs, we take vans as well as cars, and the tow is free.

The police chief has sent a notice about the car. What happens next?

Under § 10-178, removal can be ordered after a 7-day wait with notice and a hearing, or straight away if the car is a traffic hazard. Use that week. Send us the details, agree an offer, and book the pickup; the tow is free and you're paid when the car is loaded.

It's snowing and the dead car is at the curb. Can it stay?

Not once there are more than 2 inches on the street. South Holland then limits every street to 3-minute passenger stops and 30-minute freight loading, from the start of the snowfall until 8 hours after it ends and on until removal is finished (§ 10-152). Get it onto the drive if you can.
