Dolton junk car removal for the project that never got finished
Can I keep fixing my car in the driveway in Dolton?
Not legally. Dolton treats car repairs outside a fully enclosed building in residential areas as a nuisance. If the project has stalled, Cash For Junk Cars Junk My Car Inc tows the car away from your Dolton home for free, keys or no keys, and pays you at pickup by Zelle, Cash App, cash or another digital payment.

A driveway is not a workshop
Plenty of junk cars start out as projects. The car needs a part, the part costs more than expected, and the car sits on blocks in the drive. Dolton’s code has a line for exactly that: car repairs in residential areas outside a fully enclosed building are a nuisance (§ 75.002(B)). The rule has no grace period written into it.
If the work has stopped, a sale is usually the quickest fix. The car doesn’t need wheels on, an engine that turns over or keys. Tell us what’s missing when you request an offer; a call comes back within 15 minutes, and nothing is charged for the tow.
Ten days, then a bill
Chapter 75 handles the cars that have stopped being projects. It covers the unsheltered storage of old, wrecked, stripped or junked autos that aren’t in safe running condition and haven’t run for 10 days or more, licensed or not (§ 75.001). Any such car on a street, or on public or private property, for 10 days or more is a nuisance (§ 75.002(A)). The owner or occupant must move it into an enclosed building or out of the village, and must dispose of it after written notice (§ 75.003). If that doesn’t happen, police may remove and impound it, and the removal costs are billed to the owner (§ 75.004).
So an ignored notice can end with a tow bill instead of a payment.
Mostly houses, and some empty ones
Dolton had 21,426 people at the 2020 Census on 4.69 square miles in Thornton Township. About 80.6% of its homes are single-unit buildings and 72.6% are owner-occupied, so most pickups come off a drive or the curb in front of a house. The 2020 Census also found 11.4% of the 8,768 housing units vacant. If you are clearing a family member’s empty house, the car can be collected from there as long as you have the right to sell it.
Sibley, Halsted and the Bishop Ford
The Bishop Ford Freeway (I-94) runs along the east side of the village, with exit 71 at Sibley Boulevard (IL 83) and exit 70 at Dolton Avenue. Sibley is also 147th Street, and it carries IL 83 west through Dolton toward Harvey and Posen. Halsted Street (IL 1) crosses the Little Calumet River twice, and the stretch between the two bridges runs through Riverdale and Dolton. Pace buses serve the village.
Posted streets and primary streets
Dolton has no blanket overnight ban, but posted streets allow no more than 30 minutes of parking between 2:00 and 7:00 a.m. (§ 74.002(B)(1)), and during snow removal the designated primary streets are closed to parking over the same hours (§ 74.002(B)(2)). Alleys must keep 10 feet clear and driveways open (§ 74.002(C)), and a car may not be parked on a street to show it for sale (§ 74.002(D)). Trucks, trailers and tow trucks may stand on residential and business streets only while loading (§ 74.002(G)), which is how our driver works. Some blocks are residential permit areas, so mention it if yours is signed.
Papers for the sale
Illinois rules apply. If the title is in your name, it’s signed over at pickup. If it isn’t, or it’s lost, tell us what you have and we check on the call whether Illinois accepts it for a scrap sale. The no-title guide explains the usual routes.

Street-cleaning signs went up on my block. How long do I have?
Dolton posts the signs 24 hours before a street is cleaned, and nothing may park while the work is under way (§ 74.002(F)). A car that won't start can't move for the sweeper. Push it onto the drive if you can, or call us the day the signs appear; same-day pickup is often possible, though we can't promise a time.
Should I fix it or sell it?
Compare the repair estimate with what the car will be worth once it's fixed, and be honest about what else is likely to fail next. Our fix-or-junk guide sets out the numbers to compare. If the numbers don't work, a free tow and an offer that stays open settle it.
Do I have to put the car in the garage before you come?
No. Section 75.003 says the owner or occupant must move such a car into an enclosed building or out of the village, and selling it to us does the second. Leave it where it is, on the drive, by the garage or at the curb, and tell us exactly where it sits and whether it rolls.
