Junk car removal in Lansing, on the Illinois side of the state line
Does Lansing let a dead car stay in the driveway while I decide what to do?
Only for a short while. Lansing allows a nonoperating car on private property for 10 days at most unless it is inside an enclosed building. Cash For Junk Cars Junk My Car Inc tows it from your Lansing drive for free, often the same day you call, and pays you at pickup by Zelle, Cash App or cash.

The June 30 question
Every vehicle owned by a Lansing resident needs an annual village vehicle licence (§38-74). Licences go on sale May 1 and expire June 30, and the code is hard on late buyers: a licence bought in July costs twice the normal fee, and one bought in August or later costs three times as much (§38-78). New residents get 30 days to buy one (§38-79).
That calendar matters for a car that will never run again. If it’s gone before July, there is no new licence to buy for it. Spring is a sensible time to ask for an offer: we call back within 15 minutes, and because offers don’t expire, you can pick the pickup day that suits you.
Ten days, or a 72-hour notice
Lansing’s code works in stages. No partially dismantled, nonoperating, wrecked or junked vehicle may be left on any street (§38-244). On private property, one may stay no more than 10 days, and on village property no more than 48 hours (§38-245). Cars inside an enclosed building, cars at a lawful business and historic vehicles over 25 years old are exempt.
Under §38-246(d), the police chief normally gives written notice before an impound, telling the owner to remove the car within 72 hours. The notice goes on the car and in the mail to both the owner and the property owner. In other words, the notice is the last warning, not the first. If one turns up, call that day; same-day collection is often possible, though we can’t promise a time.
Kingery, Torrence and the state line
Lansing is where several big roads reach the state line. The Kingery Expressway (I-80 and I-94) crosses the village and becomes the Borman Expressway at Indiana, with exit 161 at Torrence Avenue (US 6 and IL 83). The Tri-State Tollway ends where it meets the Kingery and the Calumet Expressway, and US 6 leaves Illinois here as well.
Off the expressways, Torrence Avenue, Burnham Avenue, Thornton-Lansing Road and part of 186th Street are state roads; Glenwood-Lansing Road, 170th Street and the rest of 186th are county roads. The Grand Trunk Western main line also passes through, so tell us which side of the tracks the car is on. Village Hall on Ridge Road and the village-owned Lansing Municipal Airport are landmarks every driver knows.
Driveways first when it snows
About 71.4% of Lansing homes are detached houses and 71.9% are owner-occupied, so most cars wait on a drive. The snow rule leans on that. After a snowfall of 2 inches or more, cars left on the street have to be on the even-numbered side on even dates and the odd side on odd dates by 8:00 a.m., homes with a driveway must use it, and violators are towed at the owner’s cost (§38-219, §38-220). A dead car at the curb in January is a problem waiting to happen. For the 21.1% of homes in buildings of five or more, clear the pickup with the manager first.
Illinois papers, a few blocks from Indiana
Even next to the Indiana line, a car collected in Lansing is an Illinois sale, so Illinois rules decide which papers work. If the title is in your name, sign it over when the car is loaded. If it isn’t, tell us what you have, perhaps a registration card, an insurance card or a bill of sale, and we check on the call how Illinois treats that set. Our title guide and the steps of a sale fill in the rest. A car sitting across the line in Munster follows Indiana’s rules instead.
Seven neighbours, two states
South Holland lies to the northwest and Calumet City to the north. Hammond, Indiana is to the northeast, Munster to the east and southeast, and Lynwood to the south. Glenwood is southwest, and Thornton is west. Our Cook County page and areas we serve list the rest.
Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Can the car wait on the grass next to the drive until you come?
No. Section 38-223 bars parking on lawns, planted areas and porches in Lansing; a vehicle belongs on a designated driveway or parking area. Leave it on the concrete if it will roll. If it's already stuck on the grass, tell us so the driver comes prepared to pull it out. That's part of the free tow.
My dead car is parked in the Lansing alley out back. Is that allowed?
Not as a parking spot. Public alleys in the village are for loading and bank drive-ups only, with 10 feet kept clear and no driveway blocked (§38-209). A flatbed loading your car is exactly the kind of stop the rule allows, so give us the alley entrance and the garage, and the driver will collect it from there.
I have two dead cars, and one is parked on the street. Can both go together?
Yes, a single trip can collect both. Deal with the street one first if you can't wait: § 38-244 says no partially dismantled, nonoperating, wrecked or junked vehicle may be left on any Lansing street at all. Tell us where each car sits and whether it rolls, and we price them separately.
