A carport is not a garage

Sauk Village’s rule on dead cars turns on one definition. Section 74-287 makes any inoperable vehicle, or parts of one, kept in public view on public or private property a nuisance, and says such a car may not be stored or parked in public view. Section 74-281 then defines public view as anywhere not enclosed by a garage, and states that a carport, tent or awning is not a garage. A car counts as inoperable once it can’t run under its own power for 7 days or more.

So the car-cover-and-carport approach that works in some towns doesn’t work here. Either the car fits in a closed garage, or it has to go. Ask for an offer and we call back within 15 minutes; the offer doesn’t expire.

Twenty-four hours on the public way

On a street, the clock is shorter. A vehicle on the public way that can’t be driven, or that has sat for 24 hours or more and looks abandoned, counts as abandoned (§ 74-281). Abandoned and inoperable cars may be towed after prior notice (§ 74-282(c)), and the owner has 7 days to ask for a pretow hearing, which is held within 14 days (§ 74-284). Selling the car first means there’s no hearing to attend and no tow bill.

Sauk Trail and the Calumet Expressway

The village is named after the Sauk Trail, and Sauk Trail still runs through it. IL 394, the Calumet Expressway, becomes a full freeway at its Sauk Trail intersection here and runs north to the I-80/I-94 interchange. US 30 (Lincoln Highway) and Torrence Avenue also cross the village, and Village Hall is at 21801 Torrence Avenue.

Along Sauk Trail and IL 394 sit the industrial parks: LogistiCenter, a 525-acre master-planned park with Canadian National rail service, and Sauk Pointe Industrial Park, on Sauk Trail west of the Calumet Expressway. If your car is at a workplace lot there, get the employer’s agreement and tell us which gate.

Three parks off Lincoln Highway

Most of the village is houses: 73.7% of homes are detached and another 10.3% attached. Mobile homes make up 10.4%, mostly in three parks near Lincoln Highway and Torrence Avenue: Weatherstone Lakes, Candlelight Village and Carlisle Estate. For a park pickup, let the office know, give us the lot number, and the driver handles the rest. Keys are welcome but not required.

Snow, one stretch at a time

The snow rule here works street by street. Once snow on a stretch of street passes 2 inches, nobody may park there beyond a 10-minute passenger stop or 30 minutes of freight loading until it is cleared, and the rule starts again with each new 2 inches (§ 74-160). Signed snow emergency routes close to parking whenever the village president declares a ban (§§ 74-157, 74-158). Angle parking isn’t allowed anywhere (§ 74-134(c)).

Illinois paperwork

If you have a title in your name, sign it over at pickup. If you don’t, tell us what you can find (registration, insurance card, bill of sale) and we check on the call how Illinois rules treat those papers for a scrap sale. Our free pickup guide covers the visit itself.

Around “The Village”

Locals call it The Village. Ford Heights lies to the north, Lynwood to the northeast, Chicago Heights to the northwest and South Chicago Heights to the west. Steger is southwest and Crete south, and Glenwood sits north of Ford Heights. See also Cook County pickups and every area we serve.

Questions we hear in Sauk Village

Heavy rain flooded our corner and the car sat in the water. Will you still take it?

Yes. The county hazard plan names 221st and Yates and 223rd Place and Strassburg as spots that flood in heavy rain, so it happens here. A car that has sat in water may have a hydrolocked engine; our hydrolock guide explains the damage. If repair doesn't add up, we tow it for free.

Snow started after midnight and my dead car is on a snow route. What now?

If snow begins between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. with no earlier announcement, § 74-158 lets cars already on a snow emergency route stay until 7 a.m. After that the ban applies until it's lifted. Push the car off the route if you can, and tell us about the snow when you book.

The car runs, but the registration lapsed. Is that a problem?

In Sauk Village it can be. Section 74-287 treats an operable vehicle without valid title or registration, kept in public view, as a nuisance just like a dead one. If you're not going to renew it, a sale ends the problem. Tell us it runs when you call, and we price it as a scrap car.
