Forty-eight hours, then a fresh offence each day

Ford Heights measures a dead car’s time in hours, not weeks. Under Sec. 48-235(a), no vehicle may be left in a way that makes it look abandoned, and in no case for longer than 48 consecutive hours, with every extra day counted as a separate offence. Sec. 48-235(b) goes further: letting an inoperable vehicle stay on public or private property is prohibited outright.

The code’s definitions are broad. On private property, a car counts as inoperable if it can’t be driven, would be illegal to drive, or hasn’t moved for 7 days in a row, and it sits in public view (Sec. 48-233). On the public way, a car that can’t be driven, or hasn’t moved for more than 7 days and looks deserted, is presumed abandoned (Sec. 48-235(b)(2)). A car with expired plates in the driveway fits the first test easily.

Who enforces it

Since 2008 the Cook County Sheriff has policed the village. Under Secs. 48-239 to 48-241, the police chief or health officer may order a vehicle removed within 7 days of a notice, posted on the car or on the building, and police may tow it if nobody acts. A police tow leaves you with nothing; ours costs nothing, and you leave with the payment. Ask for an offer and a call comes back within 15 minutes.

Thinking of driving or dragging it to a scrapyard yourself? Our junkyard or pickup guide sets out the trade-off.

The old farm road to Indiana

US 30 through the village is part of the Lincoln Highway, and it began as the farm road from Chicago Heights to Indiana. IL 394, the Calumet Expressway, also runs inside the limits, and Torrence Avenue, Cottage Grove Avenue and Stony Island Avenue are the other through roads. Pace routes 357 and 358 connect to Chicago Heights. The Ford stamping plant that opened next to the village in 1956 ended up inside Chicago Heights, not Ford Heights, which is worth knowing if you give the plant as a landmark.

Snow on two scales

Two snow rules apply. Village-wide, once 3 inches or more have fallen, no car may park on any public street for 12 hours unless the street has been plowed (Sec. 48-179). On a list of named streets, the trigger is lower: past 1 inch, parking is limited to 3-minute passenger stops and 30-minute loading from the start of the snowfall until 8 hours after it ends, and through removal (Sec. 48-180). That list includes Ellis Avenue from 9th to 16th Street, 16th Street, Woodlawn, 11th Street, Berkley, Park Avenue, Drexel, Werline, Cottage Grove between 9th and 11th, Kennedy Lane North, and a group of lanes that includes Congress, Senator and Embassy. Overnight, any car on any street is limited to 30 minutes between 2:00 and 5:00 a.m. (Sec. 48-151).

A small village of houses

Ford Heights had 1,813 people at the 2020 Census, down by more than two-thirds from its 1980 peak, on 1.95 square miles of land at the edge of the Tinley Moraine. That census counted 692 housing units, 11.7% of them vacant. Recent census estimates put 76.1% of homes in detached houses, with owners and renters close to an even split. Most pickups are from a house drive or the curb in front, and a renter can sell a car that is theirs after telling the landlord.

Papers, and the villages around

This is an Illinois sale. A signed title makes it simple. Without one, say which documents you have and we check on the call whether Illinois accepts them for scrap. Glenwood is north, Chicago Heights west, Lynwood east and Sauk Village south, with Steger beyond Sauk Village. More on our Cook County page and the areas we serve.

Questions we hear in Ford Heights

My car has been at a repair shop for weeks. Can you collect it there?

Yes, and sooner is better. Ford Heights lets repair shops and garages hold this kind of vehicle for no more than 15 days (Sec. 48-236). Tell the shop you're selling, make sure they'll release the car, and give us the shop's address. The driver loads from the shop lot, and you're paid there.

Can the flatbed load from the alley?

Usually. Village code keeps 10 feet of alley width clear and bans blocking driveways (Sec. 48-152), and a short loading stop fits inside that. Give us the nearest street, which garage or yard the car is behind, and whether the wheels turn, so the driver arrives ready.

Do I need to renew the village licence for a car I'm about to scrap?

Residents need a village vehicle licence (Sec. 48-75), and it runs on the calendar year, expiring December 31 (Sec. 48-78). A car you have sold and handed over is no longer yours to licence, so a sale before the year turns means one less renewal to worry about.
