Truck streets and the way to Broad Street
Griffith is particular about where heavy trucks drive. Section 74-237 names the through truck routes: Ridge Road, Main Street, Avenue H, Colfax Street, South Arbogast and South Fairbanks. Every other street and alley is a restricted truck street, where trucks over 11,000 lb may go only for business in that block (§ 74-236).
From the Borman Expressway, the Cline Avenue interchange is signed for Griffith. South of the Borman, Cline becomes a four-lane divided local road and runs into Ridge Road, the old US 6. Broad Street, which was SR 73 until 1969, is the main north to south road and meets Main Street in the old downtown. When you book, give us the nearest cross street and the driver plans the approach from the closest truck route.
Around Griffith
Griffith’s neighbours are Highland on the west, Hammond on the northwest and Gary across the northeast line. Merrillville lies to the southeast, and past Highland to the west is Munster. Schererville, Griffith’s southern neighbour, is outside our service area. Check the Indiana towns we serve, then request your free quote.
Rails, the airport and the old downtown
The railroads shaped this town. Broad Street used to cross six intersecting rail lines, 13 tracks in all, at the south end of downtown, and the crossing was once called the busiest in the country. The E.J.&E. Griffith Interlocking Tower and the Griffith Grand Trunk Depot are both on the National Register, and the Griffith-Merrillville Airport sits inside town limits. None of it stops a pickup, but a train can hold a truck at a crossing for a while, so leave a little slack in the day.
One more piece of recent history: in 2018 residents voted 98% to 2% to leave Calumet Township, which includes Gary, and the town is now part of North Township.
Ten days in public view
Chapter 26 covers two kinds of problem car. An abandoned one has stood on public property for 72 hours or more, or on someone else’s private property for 48 hours without consent. An unmaintained one can’t be operated safely under its own power, is missing running lights or other required equipment, or has no current plate or registration. Keeping either kind in public view for more than 10 days counts as maintaining a public nuisance (§ 26-77). Only licensed junkyards are excepted.
The first inch of snow
Griffith’s snow rule starts early. Once 1 inch or more is on the pavement, no car may park on any street until the snow has been removed, and cars left out are towed as abandoned without notice (§ 74-159(c)). A car with a dead engine at the curb is a tow waiting to happen when the first storm comes, so it is worth booking our free one before the town’s.
Nearly three in four homes (73.5%) are single-unit houses, and 22.3% are in buildings of five or more units. For a complex or HOA lot, arrange access with the manager before the truck arrives.
Title or certificate: what Indiana requires
Indiana sets the paperwork for every junk car we buy in Griffith. You need the title, a BMV duplicate title, or a BMV certificate of authority, no matter how old the car is. A car of 15 model years or more can be sold without its title, but only with that certificate of authority. A newer car with neither document can’t be bought legally; Indiana makes it a Level 6 felony for the buyer, so we decline those. Let us know which papers you hold and we’ll confirm the right route on the call. The no-title guide has more detail.
Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

The car is on the grass beside my Griffith house. Is that allowed?
Not in a residential district. Section 74-189 bars parking in front, side or rear yards except on a designated or paved driveway. If the car can't be pushed onto the drive, leave it where it is and tell us exactly where it sits, front lawn or side yard, so the driver arrives ready for it. The removal costs nothing either way.
Griffith police tagged the car. How long have I got?
Not long. Once police tag an abandoned or unmaintained vehicle, it can be removed after 72 hours, or sooner if it threatens health or safety (§ 26-78). An impounded car is held at least 30 days, and after 20 days the police may sell it or have it scrapped (§ 26-79). Send the form the day the tag goes on.
My street floods in heavy rain. Should I wait to book?
Yes, wait for the water to drop. When it reaches the top of the curb, § 74-78 limits a flooded street to local traffic at 5 mph. If the car itself sat in water, it may have a hydrolocked engine, which is often the end of it as a runner. Our hydrolocked engine guide explains why.
