Where US 30 meets I-65
Merrillville grew up around a crossroads, and the town is still centred on US 30 and I-65. It was only incorporated in 1971, and on January 1, 2015 it became the most populous town in Indiana. Here US 30 is 81st Avenue, six lanes divided through town and narrowing to four at Colorado Street, while the old Lincoln Highway runs as 73rd Avenue. Broadway (SR 53) is four-lane divided from 93rd Avenue and continues north into Gary. Taft Street carries SR 55. I-65 has two Merrillville exits, 253 at US 30 and 255 at 61st Avenue.
Between Taft and Colorado, US 30 is lined with big-box stores, hotels, restaurants and car dealerships, and the Ameriplex at the Crossroads park fills Broadway between 93rd and 101st Avenues.
The southern edge of our map
Merrillville is as far south as we go in Lake County. North, Broadway leads into Gary; Griffith sits off the northwest corner and Hobart to the northeast, with Lake Station north of Hobart. Crown Point and Winfield to the south, Schererville to the west and Porter County to the east are past the line. See the Indiana towns we cover, then ask for your free offer.
Plates, garages and § 12-80
Merrillville’s code doesn’t wait for a car to look wrecked. Section 12-80(d) bars abandoned vehicles from public or private premises, and also junked ones, meaning partially dismantled, mechanically inoperative or wrecked. It adds a plate rule: a vehicle that needs plates can’t be kept on a street or on private property without current Indiana plates unless it is in a garage or shed out of sight of a public road. An ordinance officer can write a citation. If the town tows an abandoned car and nobody claims it within 15 days of notice, it goes to public sale (§ 12-80(b) to (c)).
Yards are covered too. In residential districts no vehicle may sit in a yard except on a designated or paved driveway (§ 12-91), so a dead car on the grass is a second problem on top of the first.
Six-ton signs and other winter limits
From December 1 to March 1, vehicles over 6 tons are barred from signed town streets that aren’t state highways, with an exception for deliveries (§ 12-60(b)). The town also keeps commercial vehicles over 8,000 lb out of residential districts between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. (§ 12-60(d)), so a daytime slot is the safer booking for a house on a residential street. Snow adds its own rule: after 2 inches of snowfall, every car has to be off the street.
Driveways, alleys and apartment buildings
Roughly 69.5% of homes are single-unit houses, so most pickups are from a driveway. A quarter (25.3%) are in buildings of five or more units, and 1.5% are mobile homes. For a complex or a park, arrange access with the office first. If the car is in an alley, the code wants 12 feet left clear and no driveway blocked (§§ 12-82, 12-85), which leaves room for the truck. The steps of a junk car sale apply here just as they do in Illinois, apart from the paperwork below.
Merrillville and the Indiana title rule
Indiana won’t let a recycler buy a junk car on a handshake. The seller needs the title, a duplicate title from the BMV, or a BMV certificate of authority, and that is true for a car of any age. The only no-title route is for cars 15 model years old or more, backed by the certificate of authority. For a newer car with neither document, buying it would be a Level 6 felony for the buyer, so we can’t. Tell us what you have, and on the call we’ll say which way fits. The guide to selling without a title goes into both states’ rules.
Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

The plates on my dead car have expired. Is that a problem in Merrillville?
It can be. Section 12-80(d) says a vehicle required to carry plates can't be stored or parked on private property without current Indiana plates unless it is inside a garage or shed that can't be seen from a public road. A non-runner with lapsed plates sitting on the driveway is exactly what that rule describes. Selling it ends the issue, and the removal costs nothing.
Is the tow free on the south side of Merrillville too?
Yes, anywhere inside Merrillville's limits, from the Gary line down to the town's southern edge. What lies past that edge is a different matter: Crown Point and Winfield to the south, Schererville to the west and Porter County to the east are all outside our service area. If the address is close to a border, we'll confirm before we quote.
The car died on the street during an ice storm. What now?
Move quickly. Under § 12-89, street parking is banned during freezing rain or ice until control work is done, as it is after 2 inches of snow, and cars left out are towed at the owner's cost. Separately, no car may stay on a street more than 72 hours without a permit from the police chief (§ 12-90). Book the pickup as soon as the roads allow.
