How do you sell a junk car for cash in Chicago?
To sell a junk car for cash in Chicago, send the year, make, model, title status and pickup address to a local buyer, take the offer if it suits you, and book a pickup. With Cash For Junk Cars Junk My Car Inc, the tow is free and you're paid at the curb before the car leaves.

That’s the short version. The rest of this page is the long one: what happens at each step when you sell to us, what to have ready, and what to ask any buyer before you agree to a price. It applies to Chicago and the suburbs we cover, which you can see on our map of pickup towns.
The four steps, as they actually go
- Send the details. Use the form or call (708) 719-9909. We need the year, make and model, whether you have the title, and where the car is. Mention anything big that’s wrong or missing: no engine, flood damage, a cut-off catalytic converter. Honest details now mean the offer holds later.
- Get a call back. Our form promises a call within 15 minutes, and that call is where you get a number. Ask questions. If you want to think about it, think about it; our offers don’t expire.
- Book the pickup. Pickups run from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., every day, and same-day pickup is often possible. Tell us about access: a gated lot, a narrow alley, a car at a repair shop, or a car with no keys.
- Get paid at the curb. The driver checks the car, you sign the paperwork, and you’re paid before the car is loaded. The free junk car pick up page covers what the driver needs from you on the day.
Several cars? One visit can take more than one. Say so on the first call.
Before the driver arrives
The title, if you have it. Signed over at pickup, it’s the cleanest way to sell. Find it before the driver arrives; a title in a drawer across town slows everything down. One exception: if the car is leased, the leasing company owns it and signs for it, so read junking a leased car before you book anything.
Your other papers, if you don’t. Registration, an insurance card, an old bill of sale. Whether those can carry a scrap sale depends on the state and the car. In Illinois, state rules decide which papers work, and we check your case on the call. In Indiana the rules are stricter and depend on the car’s age. Our no-title guide explains both states.
Your keys, if they exist. No keys? We still buy the car. It just helps the driver to know in advance.
Your plates and personal items. Take the license plates off, and empty the glove box, the trunk and the door pockets. Garage remotes, toll transponders and old registration papers are easy to forget. What you do with the plates afterwards is between you and the Illinois Secretary of State.
At the curb: the driver’s check
The driver compares the car to what you told us on the phone: the VIN against the papers, the general condition, and whether major parts are still on it. If everything matches, the price is the price. If the engine or catalytic converter is gone and nobody mentioned it, the offer has to change, which is why we ask up front. What sets a junk car’s price explains why those parts matter so much.
Questions to ask any buyer, including us
Before you agree to a price with anyone, get straight answers to these:
- Is towing free, or is it taken out of the offer?
- When exactly am I paid, and how?
- Under what circumstances would the price change at pickup?
- Which papers do you need from me for my state?
- Does the offer expire?
Our answers: towing is free and nothing comes off the offer for it; you’re paid at pickup by Zelle, Cash App, cash or another digital payment; the offer is built on your description, so it holds when the car matches it; we confirm papers on the call; and no, the offer doesn’t expire. If another buyer gives you vaguer answers than that, take note.
Online instant offers vs a local pickup
Plenty of websites will put a number on your car in seconds. That number is a starting point. What counts is the amount paid when the car is picked up, after inspection and after any towing charge. A local buyer who calls you, asks real questions and quotes a price that holds at the curb is usually the more reliable deal, and you can compare both before you decide.
Why not wait?
Because a dead car costs money while it sits. In Chicago, Streets and Sanitation treats a car on the public way as abandoned if it can’t be driven, hasn’t moved in more than seven days, or has been unregistered for two days or more, and abandoned cars end up at the city auto pound. If the car isn’t worth fixing (our fix-or-sell guide helps you decide), selling it now is usually the cheaper path.
Still have questions? The questions page answers the common ones, or start with a free quote for your junk car. We buy junk cars in Chicago and the south suburbs on exactly these terms, and more guides are in the guide index.
Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Who buys junk cars in Chicago?
Junkyards, scrap processors, salvage auctions, private buyers who flip parts, and pickup buyers like us. The difference is who does the work: a yard expects you to deliver the car, while a pickup buyer comes to you, tows it and pays on the spot.
How do I get the most money for a junk car?
Describe it honestly, keep the parts on it, have your papers ready, and get more than one offer. A car that matches its description at pickup keeps its price. Missing parts, a missing title or a surprise at the curb are what pull an offer down.
When do I get paid?
At pickup, before the car leaves. You choose Zelle, Cash App, cash or another digital payment. There is no check in the mail and no waiting period.
