Can a junk car be picked up off the grass in Westmont?

Yes, and the sooner the better: Westmont bars parking on any unpaved surface other than a driveway, private lots included (§ 78-317). Ogden Avenue is the spine

US-34, known here as Ogden Avenue, runs straight through Westmont, and its interchange with IL-83 (Kingery Highway) is inside the village. The expressways ring the village rather than cross it: I-88 to the north, I-55 to the south, I-294 to the east and I-355 to the west. Metra’s BNSF Line stops at Westmont station, and Pace Route 715 heads to Glen Ellyn.

We start the day in Orland Hills, and DuPage is the far end of our area. So a Westmont pickup is arranged on request: tell us where the car is, we call you back, and we agree a day together. We don’t quote a time window before that call.

Half the homes share a building

Westmont has 11,526 housing units. Only 40.8% are detached houses; 50.8% are in buildings of two or more units, and 43.0% in buildings of five or more. Just 55.1% of occupied homes are owner-occupied, so many sellers here are renters with a car in a shared lot. Quincy Station, a 94-unit building near the downtown, opened in 2022.

If that’s you, clear the pickup with your landlord or building manager, then tell us the lot and the space. Whoever owns the car is the one who sells it and signs.

What the code calls a junk car

Westmont handles this in its nuisance section, § 38-82(7). It covers storing junk cars, or cars not in active use, or their parts, anywhere in public view; dismantling, repairing or painting a car outside a structure that hides it; and leaving an inoperable car on a road, alley, driveway or lot without the owner’s or the police’s permission. Abandoned, lost or unclaimed cars are handled by the police under the state’s vehicle code (§ 78-19).

Two parking rules make it worse. A car may not sit on an unpaved surface other than a driveway, on private property too (§ 78-317). And a car can’t be parked on a street just to show it for sale (§ 78-311).

The truck routes and the overnight ban

Westmont names its Class III truck routes in § 78-164. If the car is at a business on one of them, give us the building and the street:

  • Plaza Drive, from Cass Avenue to just east of Westmont Drive
  • Chestnut Avenue, from Cass Avenue to Blackhawk Drive
  • Burr Oak Drive, from Plaza Drive to Chestnut Avenue
  • Blackhawk Drive, from Ogden Avenue to Chestnut Avenue
  • Westmont Drive, from Ogden Avenue to Plaza Drive

From 2 to 6 a.m., no car may stay over 15 minutes on any public street, parkway or public lot, and on Blackhawk Drive between Ogden and Chestnut the ban runs until 8 a.m. (§ 78-308(a)). The police chief can grant up to 5 single-evening permits a month. Snow stops all street parking once it reaches 2 inches, for 8 hours after it stops falling and while removal goes on (§ 78-306). In an alley, leave 10 feet clear (§ 78-309).

Westmont’s neighbours on our pickup map

Oak Brook is the neighbour to the north, Clarendon Hills to the east, Darien to the south and Downers Grove to the west. Willowbrook shares a border too. South on Kingery Highway you reach I-55 at exit 274, which Willowbrook shares with Burr Ridge, and Indian Head Park sits at the I-55 and I-294 junction. The DuPage County page and the areas we serve list the rest.

The title question

If the title is in your name and in your hand, sign it over when the car is loaded. If not, name what you can find (a registration card, an insurance card, a bill of sale) and we’ll tell you on the call how Illinois rules treat those for a scrap sale; the background is in our guide to selling a car without its title. Start on the offer form; we call back within 15 minutes. The tow costs nothing and nothing comes off your offer for it.

Year, make and model are enough to start an offer.

Questions we hear in Westmont

My dead car is in one of Westmont's overnight permit areas. How long can it stay?

Two days at most. The quarterly overnight permit under § 78-308(b) covers weekdays only, and a car left 48 hours or more in a permit area counts as storage, which the code prohibits. A car that won't start turns into a violation quickly there. Send us the details and we'll book the tow.

Can I take the engine apart in the building lot to see if it's worth saving?

Not in the open. Westmont's nuisance section lists dismantling, repairing or painting a car outside a structure that shields it from view. If you're unsure whether the car deserves a repair, our guide on whether an old car is worth fixing walks through it.

The car is sitting at a repair shop on Ogden Avenue. Can you collect it there?

Yes. Repair-shop lots are fine. Tell the shop we're coming, give us the shop's name and the nearest cross street, and have the papers ready or with the shop. You are paid at pickup either way, by Zelle, Cash App, cash or another digital payment.
